Gabriella Bass<\/p>\n<p>The office would ensure AI bots and other algorithmic tools don\u2019t exploit people or wrongfully cut them out of jobs, housing, credit and access to government and other services.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation \u2013 which would embolden the new office to investigate complaints of wrongful AI use and recommend penalties and other sanctions \u2013 is already gaining early steam. <\/p>\n<p>It has bipartisan support from Virgina Maloney (D-Manhattan), Frank Morano (R-Staten Island) and four other council members who\u2019ve signed on as co-sponsors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew Yorkers don\u2019t get hustled easily, and we\u2019re not about to get hustled by a computer or an AI system,\u201d said Won after introducing the bill Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy constituents are workers, immigrants, renters, small business owners \u2026 and they are more likely to be harmed by unchecked AI \u2014 and the least likely to have lawyers, lobbyists, or corporate resources to fight back,\u201d added the Democrat, whose district includes Sunnyside and Astoria.<\/p>\n<p>Won, who is running in a crowded field to replace retiring Rep. Nydia Vel\u00e1zquez in New York\u2019s 7th Congressional District (covering parts of Queens and Brooklyn), told The Post Friday she\u2019s pushing the bill because \u201cNew Yorkers are already living in the AI economy, and right now they have no one in their corner\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.77777778;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39465433\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/hands-typing-laptop-ai-chatbot-128531160.jpg\" alt=\"Hands typing on a laptop with generative AI chatbot messages and a &quot;Generate&quot; button on the screen.\" class=\"wp-image-39465433\"  \/>The proposed new office would ensure AI bots and other algorithmic tools don\u2019t exploit people or wrongfully cut them out of jobs, housing, credit and access to government and other services. This\u00a0bill\u00a0changes\u00a0that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf an algorithm is being used to deceive or exploit you, whether you\u2019re a delivery worker whose pay just disappeared into a black box, a job applicant rejected by a machine that never read your resume, or a freelancer whose schedule was erased overnight, then that is a consumer protection violation, and the City of New York will come after it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The city already has a local law in place that is supposed to regulate the use of \u201cautomated employment decision tools\u201d \u2014 including those using AI \u2014 for hiring and promotion decisions.<\/p>\n<p>However, an audit released by the state Comptroller\u2019s Office in December found enforcement of the 2021 law is \u201cineffective\u201d and has serious flaws in the complaint-handing and review process.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Gotham is fending off the rise of the machines.
