CARY, N.C. (WTVD) — Cary resident Thomas Hege is a father of four. He works in tech and says he’s concerned about his children coming up through the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) when it comes to artificial intelligence<\/a> technology.<\/p>\n

“I kind of want my kids to stay as far away from it as they can,” said Hege. “I’m very worried about AI being used and kind of taking over the creative thinking process for kids.”<\/p>\n

WCPSS<\/a> is working toward implementing an AI policy.<\/p>\n

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools already has one on the books.<\/p>\n

WCPSS staffers stressed that there needs to be human oversight of the technology and that it’s a tool for students, as well as educators.<\/p>\n

“I’d like us to see a more comprehensive policy that addresses things like the use of AI to grade and evaluate student material, the use of AI to develop curriculum,” said Wake County School Board Member Chris Heagarty.<\/p>\n

The Social Institute is a Durham-based organization that helps students navigate apps and device use, from AI to social media, in their learning.<\/p>\n

Founder and CEO Laura Tierney says AI can also help teachers with tasks such as lesson planning.<\/p>\n

“We have to prepare students to be future-ready, and AI is so much a part of the future, so kudos to Wake County for choosing to empower and equip these students rather than scaring and restricting them. AI is going to be woven into our life,” said Tierney.<\/p>\n
