PADUCAH \u2014 A panel of cybersecurity and insurance experts discussed the risks artificial intelligence poses to small businesses during a Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce seminar Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The seminar was part of the chamber’s Small Business Month events, aimed at helping businesses explore both AI’s uses and risks. The panel included experts in AI security and business insurance who spoke about their experiences with AI and what they have learned from it.<\/p>\n
\u201cI really feel like businesses are at risk if they’re not taking protective measures,\u201d Sandra Wilson, president and CEO of the Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce, said. \u201cThis was a great topic to be able to show you, as a business owner, that you can take precautions to protect your business and protect the confidential information that you have.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cybersecurity expert Johnny Sanders of SOMA Cyber in Paducah spoke about how businesses are breached through malicious uses of AI. These can include fake emails and phone calls that AI can make seem real, designed to trick people into revealing sensitive information.<\/p>\n
\u201cGone are the days when the Saudi prince was trying to share this wealth with you through email,\u201d Sanders said during the panel.<\/p>\n

The insurance expert on the panel, Jessica Newman of Advantage Insurance Services, discussed how leadership needs to set policies for AI use. She said the rules need to be clear and concise so employees understand what is allowed and the consequences they will face if they break any of them.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor example, in certain organizations, they do not allow Zoom calls because there was a time when Zoom was breached,\u201d Newman said. \u201cIt was a whole big problem. So if you find out that you have someone in your organization using that platform, what are you going to do? How are you planning if you can’t have a Zoom? Are you going to sit down and talk to them about it, and how is it going to be determined? You’re allowing your organization to be open to a breach, so you have to have that as a part of the conversation when you’re talking about cybersecurity.\u201d<\/p>\n
Newman also highlighted that cybersecurity insurance only covers malicious AI cyberattacks. That means that if an employee makes a mistake and either gives AI confidential information that leaks or falls for a scam and willingly gives up information, coverage is at an extra cost.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat we are seeing is carriers that are starting to update their policy,\u201d Newman said. \u201cYou can get coverage for that, but everything with insurance is going to have a cost, and they’re going to look at what your risk is in your industry, how many employees you have, has this happened there before, what are we seeing, and then they’re going to determine what the cost is for that coverage based on those items. But just be aware that the policy you may have right now does not cover a lot of these things that we’re starting to see happen.\u201d\u200b<\/p>\n
Wilson said that the turnout for the AI seminars has been good, and the chamber will continue to educate business owners about AI usage during their small business cohort later in the summer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Experts from various fields discuss the risks of AI entering the workplace.
