But today there are new players on the field that could help bring about yet another potentially seismic shift: open-source AI agents.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\">These personal agents\u2014OpenClaw is one example\u2014can interact with other apps and use LLMs and software to carry out a variety of tasks on the user\u2019s behalf: organizing files, responding to emails, staying up-to-date on the latest AI and market news, and executing repetitive tasks, to name a few. They typically \u201cwake up\u201d at frequent intervals to monitor the user\u2019s dashboard, log files, or ecosystems of choice, and can proactively reach out or take action across platforms when new developments arise.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">Personal AI agents can act in the user\u2019s stead across a variety of contexts, effectively performing a role akin to a personal chief of staff. As the technology\u2019s presence in the workplace grows, the implications for performance and security could be significant.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">\u2018A Builder Economy\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">Many open-source AI agents are now on the market, including also Hermes Agent and NemoClaw, often providing similar features that can give users access to more personalization, more control over computer-related tasks, and further security and operational controls. These solutions combine a model with an agentic harness including tool-calling software elements and memory.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">Much of the early use of these tools is likely taking place among developers, hobbyists, and general AI enthusiasts. \u201cThere is currently a big moment around building with these agents,\u201d says Jim Rowan, principal and U.S. head of AI with Deloitte Consulting LLP. \u201cA builder economy is emerging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">That momentum is dramatically accelerating the learning curve, says Ed Van Buren, a principal with Deloitte Consulting LLP and executive director of Deloitte\u2019s AI Institute for Government. \u201cIt\u2019s an exciting moment for personal exploration, where leaders can come face-to-face with applied AI, and it\u2019s helping to drive AI literacy and fluency for the workplace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">Already, that fluency is conveying into enterprise environments.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">\u201cIncreasingly, people will probably begin showing up to work with their own agents,\u201d Rowan says. \u201cThere will likely soon come a time when leaders will need to determine how to integrate these agents: how they log into work as distinct entities, where IP boundaries lie, who owns the resulting knowledge, and how it should all be kept secure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">Memory and Context<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">Personalized agent capabilities have the potential to unlock numerous benefits both within and outside the enterprise, Rowan says, starting with personal productivity.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">\u201cA lot of users\u2019 experience with AI so far has been through chatbots and early agents, but those tools are typically limited to specific purposes and parts of the enterprise,\u201d he explains. \u201cThey\u2019re often tools we\u2019re instructed to use at work for productivity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">Agents built with tools like OpenClaw, on the other hand, are more personal. \u201cThey are like your own productivity tool, with memory and context from past interactions you\u2019ve had,\u201d he says. \u201cThey can help uncover and enable your personal way of working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">These personal agents also bring action to the forefront. \u201cThey\u2019re not just helpful on the same level a chatbot might be, such as by offering suggestions,\u201d Rowan says. \u201cThey perform tasks on your behalf the way you want them done\u2014delivering a daily briefing tailored to your preferences, for example.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">Because they offer persistent memory over time and across platforms, these agents can also help fill in gaps among varying tools in the sometimes fragmented AI landscape, he adds.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">\u2018Who Owns Your Knowledge Graph?\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">OpenClaw agents are customizable for specific purposes using pre-established skill sets developed and shared by the OpenClaw community. With the ability to communicate via numerous messaging and other channels, \u201cthey meet you where you are, helping support a mobile workforce,\u201d Van Buren says.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">By fostering experimentation, <a data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/insights\/topics\/technology-management\/ai-infrastructure-survey.html?id=us:2el:3dp:wsjspon:awa:WSJCIO:2026:WSJFY27\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"ekxajjj0 css-i0lbhy-OverridedLink\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">open architectures<\/a> can remove friction and help uncover the art of the possible for enterprises, notes Diana Kearns-Manolatos, a senior manager and Technology Transformation research leader in the Deloitte Center for Integrated Research with Deloitte Services LP. \u201cThe potential is huge, but along with it may come issues related to bandwidth, memory, scaling, governance, and controls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">Policies and procedures for integrating personal agents into the workplace could become increasingly important, Rowan says.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">For example: \u201cWhen you chat with your personal agent at work, does that knowledge become the property of your employer\u2014or is it yours?\u201d he says. \u201cWork products aside, you and your agent will learn and build memory wherever you use it. What happens when you leave the company\u2014what becomes of that IP?\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">Indeed, \u201cwho owns your knowledge graph and digital identity?\u201d Kearns-Manolatos adds.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">\u2018It Could Get Messy\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">A separate but related question is what can be shared with colleagues, Van Buren notes.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">\u201cHow do you determine on a given user\u2019s personal agent what they can keep as local knowledge versus knowledge for their work context, and how much of their knowledge base and memories can be shared with others?\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">As an example, take relationship management. \u201cSay I\u2019ve learned one stakeholder\u2019s preferences for meetings, including how they like to be briefed, how much detail they prefer, and so forth,\u201d Van Buren says. \u201cThat\u2019s no big deal when it\u2019s recorded in a paper notebook, but when all of a sudden it becomes accessible through an agent and potentially shareable, it could get messy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">Potentially even messier: \u201cWhen I\u2019m working at home, I\u2019ll likely mention my address at some point,\u201d Rowan adds. \u201cOr maybe a religious affiliation. There are varying degrees of sensitivity, and they call for a thoughtful policy conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">\u2018Bring Your Bot to Work\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">For enterprise leaders, a first step is to begin learning about personal agent tools.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">\u201cGone is the time for talking in theoreticals,\u201d Van Buren says. \u201cLeaders should be familiar with this technology because there are significant technical and business questions to be addressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">Toward that end, there\u2019s much to be said for rolling up your sleeves and trying it out yourself. \u201cThis is a tinkerer-hobbyist moment,\u201d Rowan says. \u201cHalf the joy is the struggle of getting it to work the way you want it to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">\u201cWith access to AI coding tools, you don\u2019t have to be a developer to join the community,\u201d Van Buren adds. \u201cFunctional people coupled with AI coding tools are coming up with some great examples.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">Within the enterprise, it\u2019s important to give people a safe environment in which to try the technology without fear of causing harm. \u201cIf you\u2019re not giving your employees a place to play with this, they\u2019ll likely find somewhere else, and your data could be at risk,\u201d Rowan says.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">To foster innovation, events such as a \u201cBring Your Bot to Work\u201d day can give employees a way to demonstrate their creations and inspire others to do the same, Van Buren says.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">\u2018Daily Use Can Be Critical\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">When asked which capabilities they most need to develop over the next two years, 44% of tech leaders cite deepening AI and data literacy as their biggest focus area, according to the Deloitte U.S. CIO Program\u2019s <a data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/insights\/topics\/technology-management\/future-of-tech-leadership.html?id=us:2el:3dp:wsjspon:awa:WSJCIO:2026:WSJFY27\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"ekxajjj0 css-i0lbhy-OverridedLink\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Global Technology Leadership Study<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">Executives should try to use AI for a minimum of 20 minutes each day, Rowan suggests. \u201cIf you\u2019re not trying these new things out personally, you may start falling behind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">Indeed, in many past technology waves, \u201cexperimentation looked different,\u201d Kearns-Manolatos agrees. \u201cWith the pace of change today, daily use really can be critical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">For personal learning, Rowan suggests that leaders seek out focused communities at work or elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" class=\"css-1eopzvu-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\">\u201cGetting involved in that knowledge flow can be really valuable, both for you and for helping your agents self-improve with a set of commands,\u201d he says. \u201cIt could be possible to point your agents to an external chat, for example, and say: \u2018These people are talking about really cool ideas.
