NHLI via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaude dedicated his post-playing career to helping the next generation,\u201d the family said in reference to Lemieux\u2019s career as an agent after his playing days. \u201cBy allowing his name to be connected to this research, we hope his life can contribute to greater understanding, more honest conversations and better protection for athletes and families in the years ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They added that no one should come to any conclusions about Lemieux based on a diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe family emphasizes that this is a gift to science, to athletes, and to future generations of families seeking answers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lemieux <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/28\/sports\/longtime-nhl-star-claude-lemieuxs-cause-of-death-at-age-60-revealed\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">died by suicide at 60 years old on Thursday<\/a> in the back of a warehouse of a family-owned furniture store in Lake Park, Fla.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities confirmed on Friday that the four-time Stanley Cup winner <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/29\/sports\/former-nhl-great-claude-lemieux-hanged-himself-as-tragic-new-details-emerge-authorities\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hanged himself and was found by one of this sons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a member of the Concussion &amp; CTE Foundation Board of Directors, we are dedicated to research, treatment and finding a cure to CTE,\u201d hockey agent Allan Walsh <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/walsha\/status\/2060898041880855000?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">wrote in a social media post<\/a>. \u201cThank you for this gift and helping make a difference in people\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A close family <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/30\/sports\/nhl-star-claude-lemieux-died-of-a-broken-heart-close-pals-say\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">friend previously told The Post<\/a> that, despite being depressed leading up to his suicide, Lemieux\u2019s family had no idea that he planned to take his own life.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:0.66699219;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39537511\" width=\"394\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/continental-airlines-arena-61430396_6c20de.jpg\" alt=\"Claude Lemieux of the New Jersey Devils in uniform during practice.\" class=\"wp-image-39537511\"  \/>Claude Lemieux died by suicide at 60 years old on Thursday. He was depressed.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/30\/sports\/nhl-star-claude-lemieux-died-of-a-broken-heart-close-pals-say\/#\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>Lemieux was in the NHL for 21 seasons, spending time with the Canadiens, Devils, Avalanche, Coyotes, Stars, and Sharks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday is a dark day for the Canadiens family and the entire hockey community. I wish to express my most sincere and deepest condolences to Claude\u2019s family and loved ones,\u201d Canadiens owner Geoff Molson said in a statement Thursday. \u201cA fierce competitor who rose to the occasion in big moments, Claude was a relentless, courageous, and tenacious player who led the team to the highest honors. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe embodied the very essence of being a Montreal Canadiens player. Today we mourn the untimely passing of one of our champions.
