{"id":5905,"date":"2026-04-15T13:57:15","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T13:57:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/5905\/"},"modified":"2026-04-15T13:57:15","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T13:57:15","slug":"eu-says-whatsapp-ai-terms-update-fails-to-resolve-antitrust-concerns-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/5905\/","title":{"rendered":"EU says WhatsApp AI terms update fails to resolve antitrust concerns \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cReplacing the legal ban with pricing that has a similar effect does not change our preliminary view that Meta\u2019s conduct appears to be an abuse of its dominant position,\u201d Executive Vice President Teresa Ribera said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The EU executive is considering whether to impose rare interim measures on Meta to restore access.<\/p>\n<p>The updated charge sheet <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/214308\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">follows Meta\u2019s March announcement<\/a> that it had replaced the ban with a new pricing framework.\u00a0The tech giant said at the time that the change in Europe is intended to provide the Commission with \u201cthe time it needs to conclude its investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meta maintains that the AI sector is \u201chighly competitive,\u201d and that rival AI services remain available to customers through app stores, search engines, email providers and operating systems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe European Commission is proposing to use its regulatory powers to enable some of the largest companies in the world to use the paid-for WhatsApp Business product for free,\u201d Joshua Breckman, a spokesperson for Meta, said in response to the Commission\u2019s chargesheet.<\/p>\n<p>Breckman added that interim measures would be to the benefit of competitors like OpenAI and to the detriment of consumers: \u201cThis means that a small bakery in France paying to use the service to take croissant orders will be picking up the tab for OpenAI.
