{"id":60224,"date":"2026-06-03T05:57:10","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T05:57:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/60224\/"},"modified":"2026-06-03T05:57:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T05:57:10","slug":"the-ai-industrys-profit-problem-is-getting-bigger-goldman-sachs-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/60224\/","title":{"rendered":"The AI Industry&#8217;s Profit Problem Is Getting Bigger, Goldman Sachs Says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AI has improved rapidly and drawn massive investment, but the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/ai-spending-roi-concerns-tokenmaxxing-uber-coo-andrew-macdonald-reaction-2026-5\" data-track-click=\"{&quot;element_name&quot;:&quot;body_link&quot;,&quot;event&quot;:&quot;tout_click&quot;,&quot;index&quot;:&quot;bi_value_unassigned&quot;,&quot;product_field&quot;:&quot;bi_value_unassigned&quot;}\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">business case<\/a> remains unproven, according to Goldman Sachs&#8217; Jim Covello.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve gotten further away from that over the last couple years instead of closer to it,&#8221; Covello, the bank&#8217;s head of global equity research, said on the &#8220;Exchanges&#8221; podcast published on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s because as companies continue to invest, the amount of profit needed to justify those expenditures is also increasing, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Covello&#8217;s comments come as companies pour hundreds of billions into AI and the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/stock-market-sp500-rally-warning-black-monday-crash-deutsche-bank-2026-6\" data-track-click=\"{&quot;element_name&quot;:&quot;body_link&quot;,&quot;event&quot;:&quot;tout_click&quot;,&quot;index&quot;:&quot;bi_value_unassigned&quot;,&quot;product_field&quot;:&quot;bi_value_unassigned&quot;}\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">S&amp;P 500<\/a> reaches fresh record highs, even as investors continue to debate whether the technology will generate returns that justify the spending.<\/p>\n<p>He acknowledged that several developments have exceeded his expectations: Consumer adoption has been stronger than anticipated, AI models have advanced quickly, and companies continue to increase spending on the technology.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s still unclear whether AI can deliver returns that justify the enormous spending.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All of the economic value has continued to accrue to the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/samsung-ai-chip-trillion-dollar-boom-profit-sharing-worker-strike-2026-5\" data-track-click=\"{&quot;element_name&quot;:&quot;body_link&quot;,&quot;event&quot;:&quot;tout_click&quot;,&quot;index&quot;:&quot;bi_value_unassigned&quot;,&quot;product_field&quot;:&quot;bi_value_unassigned&quot;}\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">semiconductor companies,<\/a>&#8221; Covello said.<\/p>\n<p>That contrasts with previous technology cycles, when chipmakers prospered when their customers prospered.<\/p>\n<p>Now, semiconductor companies have captured outsized profits, while companies above them in the AI supply chain have yet to show comparable economic returns, Covello said.<\/p>\n<p>Major cloud providers have continued ramping up AI-related capital expenditures, even as investors debate when those investments will begin generating meaningful returns.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In a lot of ways, companies are losing more money today implementing this technology than they were two years ago,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>A big reason is fear of being left behind.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is a <a target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/ai-bubble-market-risk-prisoners-dilemma-big-tech-davidson-kempner-2025-11\" data-track-click=\"{&quot;element_name&quot;:&quot;body_link&quot;,&quot;event&quot;:&quot;tout_click&quot;,&quot;index&quot;:&quot;bi_value_unassigned&quot;,&quot;product_field&quot;:&quot;bi_value_unassigned&quot;}\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">tremendous amount of FOMO<\/a> at every level of the supply chain,&#8221; Covello said, adding that spending has outpaced proven returns.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it&#8217;s because everybody is afraid of what happens if the technology really takes off and finds significant positive economic use cases, and your competitors have that figured out and you don&#8217;t,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the question is whether the industry&#8217;s massive AI spending will deliver a meaningful payoff.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At some point, you got to make money.
