The student then shared those photos to his public Discord account last fall, according to Warren County Juvenile Court records.

The Enquirer generally does not name juveniles charged with a crime.

Discord, a group messaging app popular with teenagers, has been in the hotseat in recent years for enabling predators to converse with underage children, as well as for facilitating the sharing of child sexual abuse material. Herrlinger said police received a cybertip that originated from Discord about the content.

It is unclear how many other people were able to access the photos that the student shared and if those people are also facing criminal charges. Herrlinger said there were other minors in the Discord group from out-of-state who are being investigated by their local law enforcement.

A Mason City Schools district spokeswoman did not return a message from The Enquirer.

Earlier this month, Mason police charged a 17-year-old student from the high school with having dozens of sexually explicit images of minors. Herrlinger said the student separately used AI with Mason classmates’ social media pictures, but did not share them with others like the 16-year-old did.

“We’re seeing a spike in this activity,” Herrlinger said. “This won’t be the last time, for sure.”

Student’s messages include violent sexual fantasies, prosecutor says

The Mason student appeared in court April 15, where he was released to his parents under electronically monitored house arrest. He faces nine felony charges − eight counts of dissemination of an image of another person and one count of pandering obscenity involving a minor.

Several messages found on the boy’s phone detailed violent sexual fantasies involving girls, Warren County Prosecutor John Rye said.

One message referred to “wanting to watch the life fade out from their eyes,” Rye said at the hearing. Out of concern for the community and the state, the prosecutor said, he recommended the student be held in juvenile detention while the case plays out in court.

Warren County Juvenile Court Judge Joseph Kirby ruled against detaining the teenager, instead placing him on house arrest, where he will continue virtual classwork. He will not be returning to Mason High School for the remainder of the year, the child’s mother said at the hearing.

Police called feds for help identifying AI images

Mason police were first alerted to the underage sexually explicit material in January after receiving a tip from the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, according to a department incident report.

Police confirmed the IP address associated with the reported underage content was emitting from a home in Mason. Officers searched the 16-year-old student’s home and spoke with his parents in March, the incident report states.

Herrlinger said there were so many photos and videos the department asked for help from federal Homeland Security Investigations to figure out what was AI-generated and what was not.

How does the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s CyberTipline work?

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children operates the CyberTipline, a tool allowing individuals and online platforms to report suspected child sexual exploitation. Here’s how it works.

In addition to using AI to generate photos of underage peers, the student downloaded and possessed a video of an underage girl being sexually assaulted, according to court records. Court records did not specify if the video was also AI generated.

A state lawmaker from Colerain Township says Ohio’s laws on sexually explicit content generated with AI are murky, particularly when it involves children. A bill proposed in the Ohio Senate would clearly make the content illegal and allow for victims to sue the AI companies directly for allowing the content to be made.

Teenagers sharing explicit photos among themselves, sometimes with and other times without the photographed person’s consent, is not new, Herrlinger said. However, using AI with run-of-the-mill photos has changed the playing field.

“It’s never going to end,” Herrlinger said. “But this is about getting these young people the help they need.”

A second Cincinnati-area high school student has been arrested for using AI with underage classmates’ social media photos…

[2
2364,2368,5319,24,601,25,2876,5322,3354,199,2374,594,593,206,1523,5320,5321,599,764,774,598,624,1970,340,608,151,66,2370,468,607,627,2361,2373,2363,2362,2365,1109,5323,592,622,600,2367,2376
0":"post-6113","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-ai","8":"tag-k-12","9":"tag-abuse","10":"tag-adult","11":"tag-ai","12":"tag-artificial","13":"tag-artificial-intelligence","14":"tag-child","15":"tag-child-abuse","16":"tag-cincinnati","17":"tag-crime","18":"tag-crime-u0026-justice","19":"tag-enabled","20":"tag-highlights","21":"tag-intelligence","22":"tag-justice","23":"tag-juvenile","24":"tag-juvenile-crime","25":"tag-learning","26":"tag-local","27":"tag-local-news","28":"tag-machine","29":"tag-machine-learning-u0026-artificial-intelligence","30":"tag-mason","31":"tag-media","32":"tag-negative","33":"tag-networks","34":"tag-news","35":"tag-oh","36":"tag-ohio","37":"tag-overall","38":"tag-overall-negative","39":"tag-primary","40":"tag-primary-u0026-secondary-schooling-k-12","41":"tag-schooling","42":"tag-secondary","43":"tag-social","44":"tag-social-media","45":"tag-social-networks","46":"tag-story","47":"tag-story-highlights-ai-enabled","48":"tag-u0026","49":"tag-violence","50":"tag-violence-u0026-abuse
["GET
