(Image: Microsoft, Mayo Clinic)

Mayo Clinic and Microsoft are planning a new healthcare-specific frontier artificial intelligence model that aims to help clinicians make earlier diagnoses and deliver more personalized treatments to their patients.

See Also: AI Agents Introduce a New Insider Threat Model

Mayo Clinic serves more than 1 million patients annually across its U.S. network, handling complex medical issues that could require organ transplantation, brain surgery or cancer treatment. The clinic said it plans to make the new AI model available to both patients and medical professionals.

The initiative builds on the Rochester, Minnesota-based healthcare system’s seven-year-old Mayo Clinic Platform, an AI-based foundation used for clinical decision support by a network of Mayo doctors, as well as a number of partnering healthcare organizations in the U.S and globally including St. Louis, Missouri-based Mercy and the Seoul National University Hospital in South Korea.

Like the Mayo Clinic Platform, the joint Mayo and Microsoft frontier AI model will tap into the clinic’s many years of de-identified, longitudinal clinical data and medical insights. The collaboration will join together Mayo Clinic’s decades of healthcare expertise with Microsoft’s advanced AI, cloud, engineering and intelligence capabilities, the two organizations said.

The combination will produce “a frontier AI model capable of supporting the broadest scope of clinical reasoning and healthcare use cases,” Microsoft and Mayo Clinic said in a joint statement on Tuesday.

Mayo Clinic will own the new frontier AI model, but Microsoft will make it available through Azure Foundry application programming interfaces.

Patients will also be able to use the model through Microsoft Copilot as well as through a Mayo “digital front door” portal, the organizations said.

Besides the Mayo/Microsoft partnership, a number of other heavyweight tech firms have also launched their own healthcare AI chatbots: OpenAI’s ChatGPT Health generative AI tool for consumers and OpenAI Healthcare tools for clinicians; Google’s MedPaLM 2, a large language model that has been peer-reviewed and is deployed with health systems like HCA; and Epic, which embeds AI capabilities directly into its electronic health records and patient portal products.

Nonetheless, Microsoft’s collaboration with Mayo “represents a significant step up in ambition,” said Dave Bailey, vice president of consulting and strategy at healthcare privacy and security consultancy Clearwater.

“Mayo and Microsoft’s differentiator is the credibility of Mayo’s clinical expertise combined with the depth of its longitudinal data,” he said, adding that “whether that produces measurably better outcomes is still to be validated.”

It’s critical for any user of AI healthcare tools to “not confuse confidence with accuracy,” Bailey said

“AI can generate authoritative-sounding responses that are clinically wrong, and clinicians need to verify before acting,” he said.

While evolving AI developments – including the Mayo/Microsoft effort – indeed offer a lot of promise for a wide variety of healthcare use cases, some experts note that the reality is that most providers are still just beginning their AI journey in an uncertain environment without defined governance or regulatory expectations.

“What is needed most is a national framework to help guide AI adoption in healthcare which prioritizes patient safety, privacy, trust and a shared responsibility for managing risk which cannot be unilaterally born by providers,” said Mari Savickis, vice president of public policy at the College of Healthcare Information Management Executive, a professional association of healthcare CISOs and CIOs.

“The lack of a clear set of policies and rules of the road are slowing adoption by providers. Until risk-sharing is better managed, innovation will be slowed.”

Savickis said CHIME recommends the establishment of a standardized, technology-neutral patient consent framework and a legal safe harbor for the use of GenAI in healthcare, analogous and aligned to existing informed consent and privacy frameworks – such as the HIPAA privacy rule – “to reduce legal ambiguity, support responsible innovation and protect both patients and providers.”

In the absence of clear AI healthcare regulations, medical organizations should still take key actions to avoid potential privacy, security or patient safety problems, Bailey said. “Know what data you’re sharing. Confirm your organization has a business associate agreement in place and that the tool is covered by your acceptable use policy before entering any patient information,” he said.

“Watch for automation bias. There is documented evidence that clinicians defer to AI output even when it’s wrong, and that is a patient safety issue that training and workflow design need to explicitly address,” he said.

For its part, CHIME is urging federal regulators to establish healthcare AI guardrails. In a letter to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in February, CHIME outlined specific AI principles that the group said are needed to “serve as the foundation for any safe and trustworthy AI in healthcare,” Savickis said.

That includes robust cybersecurity practices and streamlined privacy laws to protecting patients and their data; the adoption of a voluntary framework that emphasizes the importance of human oversight and transparency over AI clinical decision making; and resources to empower providers of any size and opportunity for “equitable access” to AI enabled tools.

Neither Mayo nor Microsoft immediately responded to ISMG’s requests for additional details involving their AI frontier model collaboration.

Agentic AI , Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning , Next-Generation Technologies & Secure Development Healthcare Sector AI Expansion…

[11
24,420,7829,35130,35129,35131,15305,132,35128,10125,320,7828,157
post-61334","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-microsoft","tag-ai","tag-azure","tag-azure-ai","tag-chime","tag-dave-bailey","tag-epic","tag-frontier-model","tag-google","tag-mari-savickis","tag-mayo-clinic","tag-microsoft","tag-microsoft-ai","tag-openai
["GET
