\n\tWith a record-breaking<\/a> A24 directorial debut under his belt at age 20, Kane Parsons<\/a> doesn\u2019t see a place for AI<\/a> in Hollywood\u2019s future.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Backrooms<\/a> director recently emphasized the \u201cgenuinely harmful consequences\u201d that have already begun unfolding as generative AI becomes more popular in Hollywood and beyond.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI think I\u2019m in the same boat as most well-adjusted people,\u201d Parsons told The Australian<\/a>. \u201cIf I could snap my fingers and make generative AI disappear forever, I probably would. Creatively, I get no enjoyment from using those tools. It defeats the purpose entirely for me.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile Parsons sees the potential for AI assistance to be useful in the more tedious VFX tasks, \u201cright now it\u2019s difficult to discuss objectively because there\u2019s so much at stake and so many genuinely harmful consequences already happening.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd although he\u2019s not a fan of using AI in the creative process, Parsons is interested in exploring it as a topic in his upcoming work.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhat interests me more is interrogating it artistically,\u201d he explained. \u201cWe already live in a world where you walk outside and there are billboards and signs that are obvious AI slop. That\u2019s become part of our visual reality. To me, generative AI feels less like innovation than a symptom of a broader cultural and economic rot. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m interested in using that iconography in art \u2013 not using AI to make the art itself, but examining what it represents. I definitely want to explore it further in future projects,\u201d added Parsons.<\/p>\n

\n\tDeadline recently spoke to Parsons over Zoom from the editing bay as he put the final touches on Backrooms<\/a>, for which he and his VFX team used Blender, the same free CGI tool he learned on \u201ca fairly crummy laptop\u201d in middle school, with the help of some YouTube tutorials and other software he obtained \u201cthrough means that I won\u2019t say out loud,\u201d to eventually bring his web series to life at 16.<\/p>\n
