{"id":63607,"date":"2026-06-05T15:11:19","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T15:11:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/63607\/"},"modified":"2026-06-05T15:11:19","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T15:11:19","slug":"israeli-special-forces-reportedly-used-azerbaijan-base-against-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/63607\/","title":{"rendered":"Israeli special forces reportedly used Azerbaijan base against Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Israel deployed commandos and intelligence units to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/diaspora\/article-895795\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Azerbaijan<\/a> to facilitate operations against Iran during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/tags\/operation-roaring-lion\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Operation Roaring Lion<\/a>, CNN reported on Friday, citing four sources familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n<p>The Israeli forces operated out of the south of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/diaspora\/antisemitism\/article-895796\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">country<\/a>, which borders the northwest of the Islamic Republic, CNN cited two of the sources as saying.<\/p>\n<p>At their closest point, the soldiers were approximately 60km. from the Iranian city of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/defense-news\/article-889888\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tabriz<\/a>, which was struck by the Israel Air Force during the operation, CNN reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The forces included several dozen soldiers, including those from Israeli special forces, the &#8220;elite heliborne combat and rescue force&#8221; (likely referring to the Search and Rescue Unit 669), and Mossad agents and operatives, one of the sources said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The units carried out intelligence-gathering and drone operations, the other two sources told the American outlet.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"IDF Military Drone Unit train with their drones near the Syrian border, northern Golan Heights, June 26, 2025.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"632\" height=\"492\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/701067.jpeg\"\/>IDF Military Drone Unit train with their drones near the Syrian border, northern Golan Heights, June 26, 2025. (credit: MICHAEL GILADI\/FLASH90)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The forces were initially deployed as potential rescue teams in the event of an emergency within Iranian territory, but eventually expanded their scope to include military and intelligence-gathering roles, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>Iraq, UAE, Somaliland also suspected of hosting covert Israeli sites<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Locations in Azerbaijan were among several covert military sites and bases in multiple countries, sources told CNN.
