The brokerage said earnings estimates have risen as prices for both general-purpose memory and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) climb, amid growing memory requirements for agentic artificial intelligence (AI) servers.

On Tuesday, NH Investment & Securities maintained its “buy” rating on Samsung Electronics and raised its target price from 490,000 won to 530,000 won. It also lifted its target price for SK hynix from 3.1 million won to 3.2 million won. For both stocks, the brokerage cited favorable memory market conditions and improved earnings stability from the expansion of long-term contracts as the key grounds for the upgrades.

For Samsung Electronics, the brokerage said the spread of agentic AI is creating an investment cycle. NH Investment & Securities said it confirmed at this year’s Computex that the industry has entered a phase distinct from the previous AI cycle. In particular, it forecast that in the agentic AI era, the importance of central processing units (CPUs) will grow and expansion to edge devices is likely, which would more than double the DRAM capacity required for a single AI inference server compared with conventional general-purpose servers.

Samsung Electronics’ operating profit forecasts for this year and next were set at 365 trillion won and 506 trillion won, respectively. NH Investment & Securities estimated Samsung’s second-quarter revenue at 168.153 trillion won and operating profit at 84.568 trillion won, up 125.5% and 1,708.5% from a year earlier, respectively. It expected average selling prices (ASP) for DRAM and NAND to rise 48% and 60% from the previous quarter, respectively.

For SK hynix, the brokerage emphasized that memory is also entering a phase of customization. NH Investment & Securities said AI server demand is no longer confined to HBM but is spreading to server DRAM, SRAM, enterprise solid-state drives (eSSD), and LPDDR-based SOCAMM. The brokerage explained that the industry is no longer one that mass-produces simple general-purpose products as in the past; rather, packaging methods, HBM5 heat-management technology, and input/output speeds are becoming customized, so the very perspective on the memory industry must change.

SK hynix’s operating profit forecasts for this year and next were raised to 272.387 trillion won and 439.87 trillion won, respectively. NH Investment & Securities forecast SK hynix’s second-quarter revenue at 83.123 trillion won and operating profit at 65.777 trillion won, with revenue up 273.9% and operating profit up 614.0% from a year earlier. It estimated that second-quarter DRAM and NAND ASPs would rise 42.5% and 45%, respectively.

The brokerage forecast that memory price increases will not be limited to a short-term cycle. As the price gap between general-purpose memory and HBM widens, the justification for an HBM price increase in 2027 grows stronger. The brokerage judged that if the proportion of long-term contracts increases, earnings volatility will decline, which could lead to a re-rating of memory companies’ valuations.

Ryu Young-ho, a researcher at NH Investment & Securities, said of Samsung Electronics, “If stable earnings are secured, shareholder return policies will also move in a positive direction,” adding, “As this year marks the end of the three-year shareholder return policy, expectations for a new shareholder return policy will grow toward the second half of the year.” Regarding SK hynix, he said, “Strong memory demand in the AI era and changes in the industry structure could lead to a re-rating of memory companies.”

Yonhap News.
