He explained that during school hours, students are learning how to use AI responsibly.”We have filters. We have rules and regulations, guidelines. So all of that is in place in our schools. Where it becomes more interesting, I think, for us as a community and as a parent myself to start to think about with it — when it comes to AI, is when kids are off of our grounds; when in the evenings, when they’re on their phone, on their private platforms,” Cooper said. Cooper knows people of different ages are learning how to utilize AI platforms and apps at different speeds.”As schools, our responsibility oftentimes is to say this is something that we’re seeing as a trend in and across the country, in our schools, with our youth today,” Cooper said. That includes trends that can be troubling.”When you do have incidents in your community, it’s not ignoring those, but it’s talking to our kids about them. And so they’re not scared about the new technology, but that they understand that it’s not the technology that makes people do this. That people are making decisions, and those decisions can lead to consequences. And so just helping to frame that for our kids, I think, is the right thing to do,” Cooper said. One way parents can learn more about artificial intelligence and how young people are using it is by taking part in community conversations hosted by the Mason City School District. They’re dialogues about helpful resources and about the pros and cons of artificial intelligence.

Two Mason teenagers, ages 16 and 17, are facing criminal charges in a case that police say involved using artificial intelligence to create deepfake images of classmates, superimposing their faces onto pornographic material without consent.

Jonathan Cooper, superintendent of Mason City Schools, spoke about the issue, urging parents to stay engaged with their children’s use of AI.

“It’s not a time to panic as parents, but it is a time to lean in and pay attention to what we are doing with our kids when it comes to artificial intelligence,” he said.

Cooper understands the unease families are feeling.

“Safety is always our number one priority,” he said.

He explained that during school hours, students are learning how to use AI responsibly.

“We have filters.
