The complaint, filed in federal court in Oxford, Mississippi, and made public on Tuesday, asserts that the companies negligently failed to address the disturbance and created a public nuisance through excessive and offensive sound, according to the source report from Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>Three residents initiated the case on behalf of a proposed class that the lawsuit estimates includes more than 10,000 members. The plaintiffs seek damages for emotional distress, reduced property values, and other harms, along with an unspecified amount of profit disgorgement. The lawsuit states that the artificial intelligence boom is causing widespread disruption to communities across the United States by subjecting thousands of residents to near-constant noise and vibrations.<\/p>\n<p>xAI and SpaceX did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The lawsuit also names xAI subsidiary MZX Tech as a defendant, but Musk himself is not named as a defendant. A lawyer for the plaintiffs, Robert Wiygul, commented that homes should be a sanctuary, but when they are invaded by noise around the clock, it undermines the fundamental peace of a good life.<\/p>\n<p>According to the lawsuit, xAI invested more than $20 billion to build the plant in Southaven with backing from Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves. Gas-fired turbines at the Southaven facility power data centers in and around that area. The NAACP filed a separate lawsuit in April against xAI over the plant and data centers, accusing the company of violating U.S. environmental rules; that case remains pending. The U.S. Justice Department indicated in a court filing last month that it may intervene in the NAACP case, noting that the dispute raises legal and policy questions about the government&#8217;s role in AI infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t1.
