<\/p>\n<p>Photographer: Prakash Singh\/BloombergKey Facts<\/p>\n<p class=\"timeline-fact\">\u201cLook, we don\u2019t have access to, we don\u2019t know exactly how these models were used,\u201d Amodei said in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-06-10\/anthropic-ceo-doesn-t-know-if-claude-used-in-iran-school-strike?taid=6a2981b43ef24f000105c761&amp;utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_content=business&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-06-10\/anthropic-ceo-doesn-t-know-if-claude-used-in-iran-school-strike?taid=6a2981b43ef24f000105c761&amp;utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_content=business&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter\" aria-label=\"Bloomberg\">Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"timeline-fact\">The Anthropic CEO also said the use case in the instance of the school strike did not violate the company\u2019s policies and that military leaders make mistakes \u201ceven at the best of times,\u201d Bloomberg reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"timeline-fact\">\u201cThe principle that we have established, and I think the principle that was obeyed here, is a human makes the final decision,\u201d Amodei noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"timeline-fact\">The Pentagon has not claimed responsibility for the strike as a preliminary military report found the U.S. was responsible for the bombing, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/11\/us\/politics\/iran-school-missile-strike.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/11\/us\/politics\/iran-school-missile-strike.html\" aria-label=\"The New York Times\">The New York Times<\/a>, which cited unnamed U.S. officials who emphasized the findings were preliminary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"timeline-fact\">An unnamed U.S. official also told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/middle-east\/iran-us-school-strike-07d8ffac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/middle-east\/iran-us-school-strike-07d8ffac\" aria-label=\"The Wall Street Journal\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a> that U.S. military investigators think American forces were likely responsible for the bombing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"timeline-fact\">Forbes has reached out to the Pentagon for comment.<\/p>\n<p>What To Watch For<\/p>\n<p>Amodei defended the use of AI in military conflict during his interview with Bloomberg, saying, \u201cWe don\u2019t want a world where China and Russia can build, can analyze all the intelligence with AI, can use AI for attacking Taiwan and Ukraine, and we can\u2019t defend them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tangent<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump accused Iran of carrying out the strike \u201cbecause they\u2019re very inaccurate with their munitions, they have no accuracy whatsoever.\u201d He later said he did not \u201cknow enough\u201d about the bombing, which involved a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/08\/world\/middleeast\/iran-minab-school-strike.html?eafs_enabled=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/08\/world\/middleeast\/iran-minab-school-strike.html?eafs_enabled=false\" aria-label=\"Tomahawk missile\">Tomahawk missile<\/a>\u2014a munition not owned or used by the Iranian and Israeli militaries.<\/p>\n<p>Key Background<\/p>\n<p>Anthropic\u2019s AI models have been \u201cextensively\u201d used by the Defense Department and other national security agencies, according to the firm, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/news\/statement-department-of-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/news\/statement-department-of-war\" aria-label=\"says\">says<\/a> its AI has been used for \u201cintelligence analysis, modeling and simulation, operational planning, cyber operations, and more.\u201d However, the relationship between the Defense Department and Anthropic hit a wall some months ago when Amodei refused a request from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to give the U.S. military unrestricted use of Claude. Amodei cited concerns around the potential for mass domestic surveillance and the use of fully autonomous weapons on the battlefield. The U.S. military scrapped its contract with Anthropic in response and designated Anthropic as a supply chain risk to national security.
