It wasn\u2019t clear why it backtracked on this, which OpenAI then called \u201cthe next step in agentic commerce.\u201d However, the Information, which first reported on the checkout\u2019s end, said \u201conly a small number of merchants\u201d were participating, with ChatGPT users only researching what to buy but not tapping the chatbot to complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/industry-news\/openai-chatgpt-shopping-research-ecommerce-holiday-gifting-1238859596\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">purchase<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSimilarly, <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/visa\/\" id=\"auto-tag_visa\" data-tag=\"visa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Visa<\/a> framed this tie-in with OpenAI as the next logical step in how technology has historically shifted shopping behavior from stores and cash to mobile apps and digital wallets. Now that AI shopping assistants grow more popular, Visa said in a recent statement that it is time for \u201ca new commerce paradigm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cAI will transform commerce more profoundly than the internet or mobile technology ever did,\u201d said Jack Forestell, chief product and strategy officer at Visa. \u201cAs AI agents become active participants in the economy, Visa\u2019s aim is to ensure transactions are trusted, secure, and seamless. That\u2019s the infrastructure we\u2019re building with partners like OpenAI.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe transactions will operate within parameters that the consumer or business sets, placing guardrails on spending limits, required approval thresholds, and other measures that keep control in the hands of the buyer while the AI agent does the work, Visa said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThis will be part of the Visa Intelligent Commerce, Visa\u2019s portfolio for enabling trusted agent-driven transactions. Visa said it will deliver the underlying global network, payment tokenization, authorization, agent identification, and fraud monitoring infrastructure to support secure, and trusted AI-initiated <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/industry-news\/paypal-wallet-openai-chatgpt-shopping-agentic-commerce-consumer-behavior-1238858815\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">transactions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt remains to be seen how this latest endeavor would fare, especially given how consumers do not seem that eager in even having AI assist them with what to <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/shop\/\" id=\"auto-tag_shop\" data-tag=\"shop\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shop<\/a>. A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/industry-news\/yougov-survey-americans-dont-use-ai-shop-clothes-1238997945\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">YouGov<\/a> survey, for example, reported that only 6 percent of Americans are interested to use AI in discovering new clothing or brands.
