The research investigates how reconfigurable intelligent surfaces can help redirect wireless signals around obstacles and improve network coverage in real world smart-port environments.

A University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa College of Engineering research team has received advanced computing hardware through the NVIDIA Academic Grant Program to support work on artificial intelligence (AI) and next-generation wireless communication technologies.

Led by Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Assistant Professor Xiaochan Xue in collaboration with Associate Professor Yao Zheng, the team was selected to receive four NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell graphics processing units. The high-performance computer processors will support research on AI, next-generation wireless networks, cybersecurity and other emerging communication technologies. The computing resources will strengthen UH Mānoa’s research capabilities while expanding opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience in AI and wireless networking technologies.

“Our goal is to build wireless systems that are not only faster but also smarter and more adaptable to real-world environments,” Xue said. “These new computing resources will accelerate our research while giving students valuable experience with the tools that are shaping the future of communications and AI.”

Practical solutions, wireless networks

The project is part of UH Mānoa’s growing efforts in communications, cyber-physical systems and networked infrastructure. Through collaborations with academic and industry partners, the research team aims to develop practical solutions for future wireless networks while addressing challenges relevant to Hawaiʻi’s transportation, logistics and critical infrastructure sectors.

Part of the team’s research focuses on creating digital models of smart ports that combine wireless sensing, AI-powered radio access networks and real-time infrastructure monitoring. The technology could help improve operations at ports and other large transportation hubs, where moving vehicles, shipping containers and changing conditions can interfere with wireless signals.

The research also supports broader efforts to improve connected infrastructure with potential applications in transportation systems, logistics and other environments that rely on dependable communication networks.

Beyond advancing research, the NVIDIA award will provide new opportunities for workforce development by allowing students to work directly with cutting-edge computing technology used in industry and academia.

Reading time: 2 minutesA real-world smart port environment showing how shipping containers and infrastructure can block and disrupt…

[2
27152,18903,24,39981,25,13656,39983,313,12651,18803,372,2683,32580,32579,32578,30435,39977,39979,39987,39988,39978,39982,39980,39984,39986,39985,14687,238,39976,227,32615,2435
post-72403","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ai","tag-academic-research","tag-advanced-computing","tag-ai","tag-ai-wireless-networks","tag-artificial-intelligence","tag-college-of-engineering","tag-cyber-physical-systems","tag-cybersecurity","tag-digital-models","tag-electrical-and-computer-engineering","tag-engineering","tag-hawaii","tag-hawaii-college","tag-hawaii-higher-education","tag-hawaii-university","tag-infrastructure-monitoring","tag-manoa-campus","tag-manoa-college","tag-manoa-excellence-in-research","tag-manoa-research","tag-manoa-university","tag-next-generation-wireless","tag-nvidia-grant","tag-nvidia-rtx-pro-6000-blackwell","tag-radio-access-networks","tag-smart-ports","tag-uh","tag-uh-manoa","tag-uhm","tag-university-of-hawaii","tag-university-of-hawaii-at-manoa","tag-workforce-development
["GET
