Starting Monday, the new Ethos system will use artificial intelligence to adjust treatment plans in real time based on the patient\u2019s current condition. “Now the AI is going to be working on adjusting our targets and normal tissues,” said Dr. Tyler Gunter, radiation oncologist at OU Health Stephenson Cancer Center.Gunter explained that the AI technology can rewrite the game plan before each treatment, adapting radiation to what the patient\u2019s cancer looks like that day. “The Ethos system allows us to, on the fly, adapt that radiation plan,” said Gunter. “Allowing us to deliver the radiation therapy more precisely.” The $3 million machine scans the patient while the oncology team monitors from outside using multiple cameras. The AI-powered technology maps changes in the tumor, such as movement, shrinkage, or changes in shape, and adjusts the radiation dose accordingly. “We do run into some cases where there is significant change in tumor configuration or there is progression of disease unfortunately,” Gunter said.
