{"id":75601,"date":"2026-06-16T13:42:13","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T13:42:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/75601\/"},"modified":"2026-06-16T13:42:13","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T13:42:13","slug":"how-ai-is-changing-certified-seed-operations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/75601\/","title":{"rendered":"How AI Is Changing Certified Seed Operations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Certified seed growers are using AI to cut paperwork, sharpen\u00a0decisions\u00a0and reclaim time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When most people in the seed industry hear artificial intelligence, they think about breeding pipelines, genomic\u00a0selection\u00a0or trait discovery.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rachael Sharp is using AI in certified seed operations to decide where to haul a load of soybeans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On her family\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/people\/Sharp-and-Sharp-Certified-Seed\/100064276316390\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/people\/Sharp-and-Sharp-Certified-Seed\/100064276316390\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">multigenerational farm<\/a> in Allendale, South Carolina, Sharp is using AI to make real-time decisions about\u00a0logistics,\u00a0recordkeeping\u00a0and certified seed management \u2014 areas of the business that rarely make it into the broader AI conversation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t have to guess whether it\u2019s going to be more profitable for me to go to Newberry or Monetta or the port in Charleston,\u201d Sharp says. \u201cIt tells me\u00a0the\u00a0best bet based on the price.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That shift from instinct to instant analysis is moving from interesting to indispensable\u00a0in how she\u00a0runs\u00a0\u00a0operations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sharp\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0come back to the farm with a background in agriculture. She studied English with a Shakespeare concentration at the <a href=\"https:\/\/uga.edu\" type=\"link\" id=\"uga.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">University of Georgia<\/a> and went on to earn a law degree before deciding that path\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0where she wanted to spend her days. What started as helping with bookkeeping quickly turned into ordering parts, managing\u00a0inputs\u00a0and eventually becoming a partner in Sharp &amp; Sharp Certified Seed alongside her father.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, she is also leading one of the more unexpected transformations on the farm \u2014 integrating AI into\u00a0nearly every\u00a0layer of the operation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Clipboards to Real-Time Records\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certified seed production runs on data. Germination rates, lot numbers, field histories, compliance\u00a0documentation \u2014 it\u00a0all\u00a0must\u00a0be tracked, verified and ready to produce.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sharp used to manage much of that through spreadsheets and paperwork. Today, she speaks it into her phone while standing in the field.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ll\u00a0say, \u2018record that on May 11,\u00a02026\u00a0I\u2019m planting peanuts in the field behind the house,\u2019\u201d she explains. \u201cThen when\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0time to turn in my 578 to FSA\u2026 it pops up with farm number, track number, field number, when it was planted. Something that used to take hours to do\u2026\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0already done.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shift is not just about convenience. It is about\u00a0eliminating\u00a0friction in a system that demands precision.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnything that I was doing record keeping-wise on paper or even in an Excel document, it\u2019s keeping record of now,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That includes tracking <a href=\"https:\/\/aosca.org\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/aosca.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">certified seed<\/a> lots,\u00a0monitoring\u00a0germination results and even organizing storage inside her facilities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019ll tell me this is the lot number you need to plant because the germ is this\u2026 or it\u2019ll remind me to take another sample to the seed lab,\u201d Sharp says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a business where traceability is non-negotiable, AI is becoming an operational backbone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Decisions\u00a0Get\u00a0Sharper\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond recordkeeping, Sharp is using AI to guide decisions that directly affect profitability.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By feeding in transportation costs, elevator prices and delivery options, she removes guesswork from where to move grain.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m not sitting there\u2026 asking where\u00a0do we want\u00a0to take it,\u201d she says. \u201cIt tells me where we need to take it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also leans on historical farm data to plan crop rotations, pulling from records dating back\u00a0nearly a\u00a0decade.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI put in all the data from 2015, and it gives me a list of where I need to put stuff and explains why,\u201d she says. \u201cI don\u2019t always go with it, but 95 or 96% of the time,\u00a0it\u2019s spot on.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seedworld.com\/us\/news\/2026\/03\/25\/how-ai-accelerates-the-crop-breeding-cycle\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.seedworld.com\/us\/news\/2026\/03\/25\/how-ai-accelerates-the-crop-breeding-cycle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">technology\u00a0<\/a>is not replacing her judgment, but it\u00a0is\u00a0fine tuning\u00a0it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Time Back Where It Matters\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Sharp, the most meaningful impact of AI is not a yield bump or a cost savings line item. It is time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt frees up my time\u2026 so at the end of the day I\u2019m not sitting in the office doing paperwork filthy from being outside in the field,\u201d she says. \u201cIt frees up my time to be a human.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That matters even more now, with her first child due later this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the farm, the benefits show up in small but tangible ways. When a piece of equipment needs repair, she can upload manuals and get instant answers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat computer can\u2019t turn the wrench,\u201d she says. \u201cBut it can tell you which one to use.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When OpenAI Came Calling\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sharp\u2019s AI\u00a0use has been for her personal business, but\u00a0she wanted to pass on the knowledge but never expected OpenAI ChatGPT leaders to recognize it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After briefly mentioning her approach during a Clemson\u00a0AgTech\u00a0forum, she received an unexpected phone call months later \u2014 one she initially dismissed as spam.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSix months passed, and I get a phone call\u2026 and it says OpenAI, spam risk,\u201d she recalls.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She declined the\u00a0call, but\u00a0then realized it\u00a0was real.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within a week, a film crew arrived at her farm. They spent days documenting how she was using AI in a working certified seed operation. The resulting video ran during major broadcasts, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/small-business-stories\/?video=1157678305\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/small-business-stories\/?video=1157678305\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Super Bowl<\/a>, and highlighted her farm as part of a broader effort to showcase how small businesses are applying AI.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exposure led to more opportunities, including speaking engagements and even a trip to New York, where she met Oprah Winfrey at an event focused on AI and small business.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What Comes Next\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sharp is not done experimenting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She is exploring ways to connect AI with irrigation systems to improve water use efficiency and is using it to help plan infrastructure upgrades across the farm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m using it as kind of an architectural friend,\u201d she says. \u201c(I ask it)\u00a0Is it better to go this way or that way? And\u00a0it\u2019ll\u00a0tell you why.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are still limitations. Integrating data from equipment platforms\u00a0remains\u00a0a challenge, and she sees room for improvement in mapping and system compatibility.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even so,\u00a0she says\u00a0AI is not just a tool for research labs and breeding programs.
