Microsoft is the latest big tech company to bend the knee to the sky-high prices of AI-tokenomics, moving Copilot Cowork to usage-based pricing, per Axios.<\/p>\n

Put simply, businesses will be paying Microsoft for Cowork use. No more asking ChatGPT what you should have for lunch today. No more prompting for help for today’s Wordle. The free ride of compute is over.<\/p>\n

Microsoft switching from monthly plans to singular business usage is part of their desire to push enterprise AI to more customers. If you\u2019re OpenAI or Anthropic, which power Cowork, that\u2019s great, but we hope the margins on their inference bills \u2014 the operational expenses incurred by training AI models \u2014 will work themselves out sooner rather than later.<\/p>\n

Microsoft also said they\u2019re exploring a fine-tuned version of DeepSeek V4, or another open-source model as a low-cost alternative. DeepSeek, China’s top-of-the-line AI model, is known for its cost-effectiveness. Microsoft publicly admitting its plans to use DeepSeek should tell us that its AI capex costs are spiraling.<\/p>\n

It may also allude to the fact that OpenAI’s and Anthropic’s inference bills are getting too high at the same time Microsoft is trying to push Agentic AI into the hands of its enterprise customers. Copilot, Cowork, and agentic tools consume an insane amount of tokens, and all parties on both sides pay a premium when using ChatGPT and Claude. With DeepSeek and other open-source models, there are no licensing fees. Every business can tune their models to their specific business for max token efficiency, and all while Microsoft hosts the model directly on Azure, only paying for the literal cost of running their own chips.<\/p>\n

It’s a win-win down the line, unless you’re OpenAI and Anthropic, who are now being pushed out for every basic corporate task, decreasing their potential cloud capital to premium, heavy-duty “Frontier” cognitive engines.<\/p>\n
