{"id":79029,"date":"2026-06-19T01:58:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-19T01:58:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/79029\/"},"modified":"2026-06-19T01:58:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-19T01:58:08","slug":"chinese-ai-improves-forecasts-as-hong-kong-braces-for-super-typhoons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/79029\/","title":{"rendered":"Chinese AI improves forecasts as Hong Kong braces for super typhoons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An artificial intelligence model recently deployed at the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/hong-kong-observatory?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hong Kong Observatory<\/a> and mainland China\u2019s National Meteorological Centre can solve one of the toughest challenges in weather forecasting: predicting when a typhoon will rapidly intensify.Li Qinglan, a professor at the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology (SIAT) who is leading the project, said the system was installed around three weeks ago and had provided \u201creal-time updates on the progression of <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/asia\/east-asia\/article\/3355856\/typhoon-jangmi-churns-along-japans-pacific-coast-leaves-dozens-hurt?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Typhoon Jangmi<\/a>\u201d.Jangmi, which formed late last month and made landfall in Japan on June 3, forced Hong Kong carriers including Cathay Pacific Airways and Hong Kong Airlines to <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/hong-kong\/transport\/article\/3355802\/more-hong-kong-airlines-cancel-flights-typhoon-jangmi-bears-down-tokyo?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cancel or reschedule flights to Japan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The observatory has predicted that Hong Kong will experience four to seven typhoons between now and October, and has warned that some could become super typhoons due to the El Nino phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Forecasting rapid intensification, when a tropical cyclone\u2019s maximum sustained winds increase by 15 metres per second (49.2 feet per second) within a 24-hour period, or by 10m\/s within 12 hours, has been one of the toughest challenges in meteorology.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cRapid intensification rarely happens, and is highly unpredictable, making preventive measures and responses extremely likely to be delayed,\u201d Li said in a statement issued by SIAT last week.
