It is significantly reshaping practically every aspect of our lives, including in ways that probably no one anticipated. Its rate of adoption and impact have been unprecedented when compared with other technologies.<\/p>\n<p>AI as a distinct field was formally established in 1956 at the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence, proposed by John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, and Claude Shannon. In their August 1955 proposal for the research project, the scientists introduced the term artificial intelligence and envisioned machines capable of simulating human intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>AI is the &#8220;science of making machines do things that would require intelligence if done by men,&#8221; as defined by Minsky. The professor received the ACM Turing Award, which is often called the &#8220;Nobel Prize in computing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Since AI&#8217;s humble beginnings 70 years ago, it has evolved significantly in its capabilities, gained prominence, and earned widespread adoption across many areas including business, education, finance, health care, industry, and the military.<\/p>\n<p>IEEE&#8217;s contributions to the progress and adoption of AI throughout its journey are substantial and multifaceted.<\/p>\n<p>As we celebrate AI&#8217;s 70th birthday, understanding its history, current status, limitations, and concerns is key to harnessing it for good.<\/p>\n<p>The technology&#8217;s roller-coaster evolution<\/p>\n<p>Although AI emerged as a distinct field in 1956, its intellectual roots extend back further. The ideas and theories that underpin AI predate modern computers such as the <a data-ylk=\"slk:ENIAC;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aol.com\/lifestyle\/eniac-first-general-purpose-digital-180005031.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ENIAC<\/a>, unveiled in 1946.<\/p>\n<p>In 1943 <a data-ylk=\"slk:Warren Sturgis McCulloch;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Warren_Sturgis_McCulloch\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Warren Sturgis McCulloch<\/a>, a neurophysiologist and cybernetician, and <a data-ylk=\"slk:Walter Pitts;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Walter_Pitts\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Walter Pitts<\/a>, a logician working in computational neuroscience, were inspired by the human brain. The two devised mathematical models of artificial neurons, demonstrating that artificial neural networks could perform logical computation.<\/p>\n<p><a data-ylk=\"slk:Frank Rosenblatt;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frank_Rosenblatt\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Frank Rosenblatt<\/a>, a <a data-ylk=\"slk:Cornell;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cornell.edu\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Cornell<\/a> psychologist, later advanced those ideas by developing the <a data-ylk=\"slk:perceptron;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/towardsdatascience.com\/what-is-a-perceptron-basics-of-neural-networks-c4cfea20c590\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">perceptron<\/a>, an early neural network that laid the foundation for modern machine learning and deep learning.<\/p>\n<p>A major milestone came in 1950, when celebrated computer scientist <a data-ylk=\"slk:Alan Turing;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/alan-turings-delilah\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Alan Turing<\/a> posed the question, &#8220;Can machines think?&#8221; In his 1950 landmark paper &#8220;<a data-ylk=\"slk:Computing Machinery and Intelligence;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/courses.cs.umbc.edu\/471\/papers\/turing.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Computing Machinery and Intelligence<\/a>,&#8221; published in <a data-ylk=\"slk:Mind;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/mind\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Mind<\/a>, he explored the nature of machine intelligence. He introduced the &#8220;imitation game,&#8221; later known as the <a data-ylk=\"slk:Turing test;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Turing_test\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Turing test<\/a>, as a practical means of evaluating it. The test remains an influential concept in AI and the philosophy of intelligence, as I discussed in my article &#8220;<a data-ylk=\"slk:The Turing Test at 75: Its Legacy and Future Prospects;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/ieeexplore.ieee.org\/document\/10897255\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">The Turing Test at 75: Its Legacy and Future Prospects<\/a>,&#8221; published in <a data-ylk=\"slk:IEEE Intelligent Systems;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.computer.org\/csdl\/magazine\/ex\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">IEEE Intelligent Systems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a data-ylk=\"slk:Claude Shannon;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/claude-shannon-information-theory\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Claude Shannon<\/a>, recognized as the father of information theory, explored the potential of machines for complex reasoning tasks in his 1950 article &#8220;<a data-ylk=\"slk:Programming a Computer for Playing Chess;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.computerhistory.org\/chess\/doc-431614f453dde\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Programming a Computer for Playing Chess<\/a>,&#8221; published in <a data-ylk=\"slk:Philosophical Magazine;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/journals\/tphm20\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Philosophical Magazine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1956 AI became a formal discipline, inspiring scientists to explore and advance it further. John McCarthy developed <a data-ylk=\"slk:Lisp;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lisp_(programming_language\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Lisp<\/a>) in 1958, and it became the dominant programming language for AI research and development. In 1959 <a data-ylk=\"slk:Arthur Lee Samuel;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/history.computer.org\/pioneers\/samuel.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Arthur Lee Samuel<\/a>, a computer science professor at <a data-ylk=\"slk:Stanford;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stanford.edu\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Stanford<\/a>, introduced the term <a data-ylk=\"slk:machine learning;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/mitsloan.mit.edu\/ideas-made-to-matter\/machine-learning-explained\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">machine learning<\/a> to describe programs that could improve their performance through experience.<\/p>\n<p>In the early 1980s, renewed enthusiasm and government funding fueled the development of <a data-ylk=\"slk:symbolic AI;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.datacamp.com\/blog\/what-is-symbolic-ai\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">symbolic AI<\/a>, a <a data-ylk=\"slk:rule-based expert system;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scaler.com\/topics\/artificial-intelligence-tutorial\/rule-based-system-in-ai\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">rule-based expert system<\/a> (also known as a knowledge-based system) that encodes domain-specific knowledge as sets of rules. A notable example was <a data-ylk=\"slk:MYCIN;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/gilpress\/2020\/04\/27\/12-ai-milestones-4-mycin-an-expert-system-for-infectious-disease-therapy\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">MYCIN<\/a>, designed to diagnose infectious diseases.<\/p>\n<p>Although successful in limited domains, expert systems&#8217; inherent limitations have restricted their broader adoption. Expert refers to a computer system that mimics human experts in a specific domain. It was popular in the early days of AI, and subsequently disappeared with advances in AI such as neural networks and machine learning.<\/p>\n<p>AI&#8217;s journey was marked by periods of soaring expectations and disappointing progress, known as &#8220;<a data-ylk=\"slk:AI winters;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.actuaries.asn.au\/research-analysis\/history-of-ai-winters\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">AI winters<\/a>,&#8221; during which funding, interest, and confidence declined. <a data-ylk=\"slk:Analyses of the episodes;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.datacamp.com\/blog\/ai-winter\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Analyses of the episodes<\/a> revealed recurring causes and insightful lessons for the field.<\/p>\n<p>A new phase of growth\u2014often described as &#8220;AI spring&#8221;\u2014emerged in the 2010s with advances in <a data-ylk=\"slk:deep learning;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/think\/topics\/deep-learning\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">deep learning<\/a>, the rise of <a data-ylk=\"slk:large language models;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudflare.com\/learning\/ai\/what-is-large-language-model\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">large language models<\/a>, the <a data-ylk=\"slk:transformer architecture;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/think\/topics\/transformer-model\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">transformer architecture<\/a>, and <a data-ylk=\"slk:generative AI;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/think\/topics\/generative-ai\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">generative AI<\/a> (GenAI).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The imperative before us today is not only to advance AI&#8217;s capabilities but also to ensure that it remains human-centered, trustworthy, ethical, and dedicated to enhancing human well-being and societal progress.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Unlike earlier approaches that processed information sequentially, a transformer model analyzes an entire sequence of text or audio, assessing the importance of each word or component relative to others, enabling dramatic advancements in GenAI and its applications.<\/p>\n<p><a data-ylk=\"slk:Ashish Vaswani;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ashish_Vaswani\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Ashish Vaswani<\/a>, a former computer scientist at <a data-ylk=\"slk:Google;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Google<\/a>, and his colleagues at <a data-ylk=\"slk:Google Brain;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.geeksforgeeks.org\/blogs\/what-is-google-brain\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Google Brain<\/a> introduced the transformer architecture that underpins today&#8217;s generative AI systems in their influential 2017 paper &#8220;<a data-ylk=\"slk:Attention Is All You Need;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1706.03762\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Attention Is All You Need<\/a>.&#8221; It can analyze vast amounts of data, extract insights, and identify trends or anomalies that are difficult for humans to detect. The programs can automate routine tasks and repetitive knowledge work, improve productivity, and reduce costs.<\/p>\n<p>Chatbots and other forms of GenAI can answer queries and rapidly create text, images, videos, music, software code, educational materials, and other content on the fly in response to a user&#8217;s prompts, accelerating information-gathering, innovation, and decision-making. AI summarizes, translates, and rephrases text effectively and can assist in idea generation. It also facilitates natural-language interactions, making technology more accessible to nonexperts and the diverse global community. Its multimodal capabilities enhance its usefulness across diverse domains. Additionally, it can serve as a <a data-ylk=\"slk:powerful collaborator;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/thedecisionlab.com\/reference-guide\/computer-science\/human-ai-collaboration\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">powerful collaborator<\/a>, augmenting creativity and problem-solving capacity rather than replacing human intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>AI is transitioning from standalone tools to autonomous, goal-driven systems. Moreover, AI can facilitate and amplify the spread of misinformation, deepfakes, and manipulated content, undermining public trust and driving the algorithmic manipulation of public opinion. The flattering, people-pleasing, or affirming behavior known as <a data-ylk=\"slk:AI sycophancy;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aol.com\/lifestyle\/why-ai-chatbots-agree-even-120003301.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI sycophancy<\/a> can be harmful as well.<\/p>\n<p>Overreliance on AI could erode human judgment, critical thinking, and decision-making skills. And autonomous systems can make errors with serious consequences in critical domains including defense, health care, and transportation.<\/p>\n<p>The technology&#8217;s development and deployment, therefore, must be guided by informed understanding, sound judgment, and responsible governance. In assessing AI&#8217;s suitability for any application, its capabilities, advantages, limitations, and risks must be carefully and holistically considered.<\/p>\n<p>IEEE&#8217;s contributions<\/p>\n<p>IEEE has not merely documented and disseminated AI&#8217;s progress. It has actively fostered, standardized, and guided it toward further advances and responsible use for the benefit of humanity. IEEE maintains a <a data-ylk=\"slk:hub for information;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/ai.ieee.org\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">hub for information<\/a> on its AI activities that is a valuable resource for researchers, developers, regulators, and users.<\/p>\n<p>IEEE publishes 11 <a data-ylk=\"slk:AI-focused journals;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/ai.ieee.org\/publications\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">AI-focused journals<\/a> that advance the frontiers of knowledge, including<a data-ylk=\"slk:IEEE Intelligent Systems;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.computer.org\/csdl\/magazine\/ex\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">IEEE Intelligent Systems<\/a>.
