KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan, June 24 (Reuters) – Taiwan’s ASE Technology Holding, the world’s largest chip packaging and \u200ctesting provider, is expanding capacity to meet AI \u200cdemand, Chief Operating Officer Tien Wu said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Here are some details:<\/p>\n
\u2022 \u200bWu said the holding company is adding 15 new sites this year, including six greenfield sites for ASE, seven greenfield sites for its unit Siliconware Precision Industries, and sites \u200cacquired from Taiwan’s Innolux \u2060Corporation earlier this year.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Wu reiterated that this year’s capital expenditure is budgeted at $8.5 billion \u2060and may exceed that amount.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Wu said that the factory expansion is not just for the next two years, \u200bbut for \u200b2029 and beyond to meet \u200bstrong AI demand.<\/p>\n
\u2022 The \u200ccompany said it has been investing in the U.S., with two testing factories in California and two more factories planned.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Regarding investment in Arizona at a particular customer’s request, Wu said the company has been evaluating plans but \u200cneeds to carefully consider what investments \u200bto make.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Nvidia said last \u200byear it planned to \u200bbuild up to $500 billion worth of AI \u200cserver infrastructure in the United \u200bStates with partners \u200bincluding ASE subsidiary Siliconware Precision Industries, but the subsidiary has yet to announce any investment plans. Siliconware Precision \u200bIndustries (SPIL) is \u200ca major packaging supplier for Nvidia’s AI chips.<\/p>\n
