In total,\u00a040\u00a0teams\u00a0participated\u00a0with the winners flying to Jeju Island, Korea to join the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd-nea.org\/jcms\/pl_114188\/international-workshop-on-artificial-intelligence-for-nuclear-energy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NEA\u00a0International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence for Nuclear Energy<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The rise of\u00a0artificial intelligence (AI)\u00a0comes\u00a0as governments and industry pursue ambitious nuclear new build programmes to triple nuclear\u00a0capacity\u00a0by 2050.\u00a0AI is being explored\u00a0as a means to\u00a0improve decision making across all aspects\u00a0of nuclear power plants including in the management of construction risks,\u00a0one of\u00a0priorities\u00a0for the sector.\u00a0The\u00a0NEA\u00a0coding competition\u00a0provided\u00a0an opportunity\u00a0to engage with and connect an\u00a0exciting\u00a0wave of\u00a0young\u00a0AI\u00a0talent\u00a0to\u00a0the nuclear\u00a0energy\u00a0sector.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Competition\u00a0design\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0coding\u00a0competition was designed to provide hands-on experience to students with a real-world problem that had practical applications in\u00a0nuclear\u00a0energy\u00a0sector. The NEA\u00a0chose risk registers, a widely used tool for managing risk in construction projects, as the\u00a0focus\u00a0of the competition. In practice, risk registers come in many different formats, often\u00a0with unstructured information that is difficult for computers to read and understand. Participants were therefore tasked with automating the\u00a0conversion of these registers into structured, machine-readable data.
