VIENNA, June 28 (Reuters) – Austria has proposed that the European Union should consider hosting Anthropic within the \u200cbloc’s borders in order to counter efforts by \u200cthe United States to block foreigners from using the AI company’s most \u200badvanced models. <\/p>\n
In a letter to EU Technology Commissioner Henna Virkkunen released by the Austrian government, Austria’s State Secretary for Digitalization Alexander Proell wrote it was important that Europe was not \u200ccut off from major \u2060innovations. <\/p>\n
“Let us jointly explore the strategic establishment and participation of Anthropic within the European Union. \u2060With legal certainty, market access, capital and a set of values that suits this company,” Proell said in the letter. <\/p>\n
He \u200bdid not \u200bsay how the step could \u200bbe taken and acknowledged \u200cthere would be scepticism about whether it was possible. <\/p>\n
“The real question is not whether it is easy,” Proell wrote. “The question is whether we Europeans are prepared to be the architects of our technological future, or whether we wish to \u200cremain mere administrators of decisions made \u200belsewhere.” <\/p>\n
Anthropic did not immediately reply \u200bto a request for \u200bcomment on the Austrian proposal. <\/p>\n
Earlier this month, \u200cthe European Commission proposed laws to \u200bboost domestic \u200bcloud, AI and semiconductor industries and cut reliance on U.S. Big Tech, defying U.S. government criticism of the \u200bbloc’s crackdown on \u200cits industry. <\/p>\n
