From Ladybird to Hereditary, their back catalogue of films has been a beacon of hope for original stories, especially in the wake of a post-pandemic cinema slump. So when they announced an AI partnership with Google, many of their supporters were shocked, to say the least. The steady introduction of AI into filmmaking has received significant pushback from many cinephiles, who believe the technology is anti-art and don’t want it to replace human creativity.

via A24

“A24 doing this literally 1 week after Backrooms director stating that he doesn’t want AI to be used in his movies is hilarious,” one person on X said in response to the news.

“Now know why they didn’t pick up the rights for that Sam Altman biopic,” said another.

In response to the massive backlash, A24 told WIRED it was clarifying its intentions.

“Our relationship with our audience is something we don’t take for granted,” Sophia Shin, a representative for the company, said. “This partnership exists because we want to dictate what tools get built for artists, and so they have a voice in shaping them rather than having tools handed to them. We’d rather have a seat at the table than on the sidelines.”

via A24

This implies that A24 views AI in filmmaking as inevitable and wants to have a say in how and when it’s used, rather than ignore it until it’s too late and be forced to deal with it. But this stance on AI is missing the point many of their supporters are trying to put across – no one wants to see AI take the place of humans in filmmaking.

From rough drafts to storyboarding, from special effects to editing, what makes film such a special medium is the way many people come together, united by the goal of making a piece of art. A future where any of this is replaced with AI and algorithm predictors is a future where art as we know it is dead.

For all the latest film and TV updates and hot takes, like our Facebook page.

Featured image via A24/Canva

 Post navigation

Last week, A24 announced their plans to partner with Google DeepMind to research and build AI tools…

[9
44199,24,5044,3253,132,7543
post-89615","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-google","tag-a24","tag-ai","tag-deepmind","tag-film","tag-google","tag-google-deepmind
["GET
