A major British water utility is significantly expanding its use of artificial intelligence to monitor critical infrastructure and reduce pollution risks.<\/p>\n
Yorkshire Water is set to add 1,500 sewage and clean water pumping assets to its predictive condition monitoring program over the next 18 months. The expansion utilizes electrical signature analysis technology provided by industrial AI specialist Samotics.<\/p>\n
The initiative targets submerged sewage pumps, screw pumps and clean water smart pumps. Because these assets are submerged or difficult to access, traditional vibration sensors are impractical to install. The AI-driven technology instead analyzes current and voltage signals remotely from motor control cabinets to identify developing faults weeks before they cause a failure.<\/p>\n
To date, the monitoring technology has detected 726 developing faults, prevented 40 pollution events and delivered a 571% return on investment for the utility. The upcoming 1,500-asset expansion will bring Yorkshire Water\u2019s total monitored infrastructure to more than 4,000 assets.<\/p>\n
Data insights generated by the system will be integrated into the utility’s strategic data and cloud telemetry platforms to support long-term deterioration analysis and inform future infrastructure investments.<\/p>\n
