A Hollywood portrayal of OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman portrayed by actor Andrew Garfield will be released later this year, after Amazon MGM Studios dropped the movie.<\/p>\n
\u201cArtificial,\u201d which chronicles Altman\u2018s 2023 ouster from OpenAI and his reinstatement as CEO, was acquired by Neon, the studio announced Tuesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe acquisition underscores Neon\u2019s commitment to partnering with visionary filmmakers, and bringing ambitious cinema to audiences around the world,\u201d the studio said in a statement. \u201c\u2018Artificial\u2019 will compete in this year\u2019s Oscar race.\u201d <\/p>\n
The film has a critical take on artificial intelligence, according to two sources briefed on it who declined to be named. That portrayal caused Amazon to want to distance itself from the film, given the company\u2019s $50-billion investment<\/a> in OpenAI, the sources said. <\/p>\n Amazon declined to comment on the claims. In a statement, the company said it has \u201cthe utmost respect and admiration\u201d for the movie\u2019s director, Luca Guadagnino. \u201cWe believe that \u2018Artificial\u2019 will be better served if it were released by a different studio and are working closely with the filmmaking team to find the film a new home,\u201d Amazon said.<\/p>\n Puck News first reported Amazon dropping the movie. <\/p>\n Other studios, including Netflix and A24, screened \u201cArtificial.\u201d Netflix passed on the film. <\/p>\n Amazon\u2019s decision to drop the film comes at a time when Hollywood is grappling with the growth of artificial intelligence.
