(Image: Getty Images)            <\/p>\n<p>Much of the work involved in life sciences and biomedical research consists of tedious, time-consuming tasks that can bog down discovery, development and collaboration, often delaying promising medical breakthroughs. <\/p>\n<p>See Also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bankinfosecurity.com\/ai-agents-introduce-new-insider-threat-model-a-31525?rf=RAM_SeeAlso\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI Agents Introduce a New Insider Threat Model<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Anthropic is aiming to dramatically reduce the time and effort spent in many of those burdensome tasks, including literature review, data analysis and manuscript preparation, through <a href=\"https:\/\/claude.com\/product\/claude-science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Claude Science<\/a>, a new artificial intelligence workbench for scientists designed to streamline research workflows.<\/p>\n<p>Claude Science, unveiled on Tuesday, isn&#8217;t a new frontier AI model but rather a &#8220;public beta app&#8221; that combines scientific tools, database connections and compute integrations with existing Claude model plans, Anthropic said. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;General AI assistants can discuss biology, but they can&#8217;t run a pipeline, navigate scientific databases, orchestrate cluster jobs or keep track of what happened in a previous session,&#8221; Anthropic said. <\/p>\n<p>The AI workbench manages compute environments for each user, and saves full provenance &#8211; or evidence &#8211; on every result generated, so scientific results will be traceable and reproducible by other researchers on a team, the company said.<\/p>\n<p>Claude Science also includes &#8220;analysis specialists&#8221; for genomics, single-cell, proteomics, structural biology, cheminformatics and other areas of expertise, and it can connect natively to more than 60 scientific databases and domain-specific open models, Anthropic said.<\/p>\n<p>Claude Science is the latest component of Anthropic&#8217;s push into life sciences. On Tuesday, company executives during a conference in San Francisco also revealed that Anthropic is launching an internal drug discovery program &#8211; primarily focused on &#8220;neglected diseases&#8221; &#8211; and plans to develop AI tools designed for bio-pharmaceutical firms, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/30\/anthropic-launches-ai-drug-discovery-program-claude-science.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CNBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Anthropic did not immediately respond to ISMG&#8217;s request for additional details about Claude Science and on the company&#8217;s internal drug discovery initiative.<\/p>\n<p>Certainly, the race to use AI to speed up and improve drug discovery and development, clinical trials and critical work in the life sciences, biomedical, pharmaceutical and healthcare sector is heating up. <\/p>\n<p>For instance, last month Microsoft and Mayo Clinic revealed they are collaborating on a new healthcare-specific frontier AI model that aims to help clinicians make earlier diagnoses and deliver more personalized treatments to their patients (see: <a href=\" https:\/\/www.healthcareinfosecurity.com\/mayo-clinic-microsoft-team-up-on-ai-for-doctors-patients-a-31856\">Mayo Clinic, Microsoft Team Up on AI for Doctors, Patients<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Separate AI efforts are underway by drug makers including Eli Lily, Novo Nordisk and others &#8211; as well as proof of concept pilots involving the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for real-time clinical trials (see: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bankinfosecurity.com\/us-fda-piloting-use-ai-for-real-time-clinical-trials-a-31549\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US FDA Piloting Use of AI for Real-Time Clinical Trials<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Law firm Foley Hoag, which practices on the life science and healthcare industries, <a href=\"https:\/\/foleyhoag.com\/news-and-insights\/publications\/alerts-and-updates\/2026\/june\/artificial-intelligence-in-life-sciences-key-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a> in a June report that global AI in the life sciences market was valued at approximately $17 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $69 billion by 2031.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In drug discovery, AI-enabled workflows have been shown to reduce time and cost at the preclinical candidate stage by up to 40% and 30%, respectively,&#8221; the law firm said.<\/p>\n<p>Many experts deep in the weeds of AI work are seeing up close how those trends are playing out.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;AI will play an important role in the future of medicine and scientific research for high precision drug discovery, effective therapeutic designs, advanced genetic screening, and increased proliferation of algorithms to enhance our understanding of immunology and age-related degenerative diseases,\u201d  said Nii Osae, CEO and founder of Mindbeam AI, developer of a large language model, Litespark.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest advantage for AI in life sciences is the increased speed for research and molecular synthesis and analysis, he said. &#8220;Research in life sciences often requires an ensemble of tools to perform various tasks in each experimental pipeline,&#8221; he said. This increases both the overall cost and time to both confirm the hypothesis and implement the procedures, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The use of agentic AI tools shortens repetitive scientific tasks and reduces the time to solution convergence, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Other experts agree. &#8220;Most researchers I speak with say the biggest bottleneck is not discovery itself. It is about deciding which of the many discoveries are ready to move forward, how to test them rigorously, how to accelerate regulatory approval and how to do so more cost-effectively,&#8221; said Darren Kimura, CEO and president of AI infrastructure provider AISquared.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That is where AI can have a practical and meaningful impact,&#8221; he said. AI can help researchers prioritize which compounds, hypotheses, or trials deserve the most attention. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It can help organize prior research, surface gaps in evidence, identify risks earlier, and reduce the manual burden around documentation and analysis. The goal should be to help scientists move faster through validation with stronger evidence and better reproducibility,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>But while AI can bring significant efficiencies and other benefits to life sciences tasks, human oversight and strong governance are paramount considerations, experts said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since current AI tools are prone to hallucination, results from these systems should be auditable with human-in-the-loop guardrails to ensure high validity and safety of the results,&#8221; Osae said.<\/p>\n<p>Also, patient data governance is of immense importance since it serves as inputs to train and improve the AI models incorporated in the research pipeline, he said. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This should reduce the risk of therapeutic bias that could stem from over-reliance on the model without balancing the output with real-world heuristics,&#8221; Osae said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The winners in life sciences AI will not simply be the companies with the most powerful models.
