The story behind their new AI deal

   00:00 Speaker A

All right, Dan, so Broadcom saying it’s going to provide these new custom chips to Apple, expanded partnership. Um what’s interesting is that these aren’t generic chips. These are kind of purpose-built silicon increasingly important for for AI workloads. So so what do you make of this, Dan? What do investors need to know?

   00:27 Dan

Yeah, these are A6 or application specific integrated circuits. Uh just threw that out for for no real reason at all. But uh this is uh according to at least Bloomberg’s Mark German who, you know, we talk about how we live inside of Apple somehow. Uh these will go into Apple’s uh AI servers or its it servers that it will build on its own. Now right now they use basically high-powered Mac chips uh to run these. So this would be a different type of chip now that they would be launching and using for these types of servers and perhaps getting better performance over time uh at perhaps a lower cost as well. and that you know, obviously is incredibly important when it comes to these types of servers. Uh and for Apple, it’s it’s kind of another feather in its cap when it comes to its AI capabilities. Now, uh a lot of it has to do with them selling Apple intelligence on the kind of privacy aspect and ensuring that it can run its own servers and is able to power them is an important part of that. Uh And so I think that that’s uh one of the key pieces that they’re kind of going to be using for marketing Apple intelligence as we get closer to the the, you know, big Siri relaunch uh later this year. Um it’ll be a beta but still a relaunch nonetheless. Uh and and so this will be a a key piece of that.

   02:00 Speaker A

You know, did an Apple of course has spent years bringing chip design in house. Why does Apple still need Broadcom? Uh why is Apple still need Hatan and his team for these next gen chips?

   02:22 Dan

I think just because it makes sense not to necessarily bring all of this in house uh when it comes to these kinds of AI servers, right? You know, there there’s going to be a large need for them for Apple, but it’s not going to be uh along the lines of something like the iPhone chips uh or even iPhone modems uh where it’s at that kind of scale where you’re, you know, selling hundreds of millions a year. Um you know, iPad, uh Mac, they they’ve managed to bring in a lot of the chip production or rather chip uh need uh inside Apple when it comes to overall design. It’s it’s in your Mac, it’s in your iPad, it’s in your iPhone, uh you know, your Apple Watch, uh things along those lines. And so perhaps this just doesn’t necessarily uh reach the the necessary volume that they would need to go ahead and design their own chip and then uh you know, have it produced uh by a, you know, a third-party company. Um I I think that’s really the the the main issue here. and you know, I mean, they’ve managed to do this just over over the years. They got to get this done pretty quick though when it comes to the AI side of things.

00:00 Speaker A All right, Dan, so Broadcom saying it’s going to provide these new custom chips to…

[2
24,319,3127,25,328,2209
post-96933","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ai","tag-ai","tag-apple","tag-apple-intelligence","tag-artificial-intelligence","tag-broadcom","tag-dan-howley
["GET
