For the past month or so, tech CEOs have been striking a more optimistic tone.<\/p>\n<p>In late May,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/topics\/subject\/openai&quot;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">OpenAI<\/a>\u00a0Chief Executive\u00a0Sam Altman\u2014who has long predicted that AI will lead to\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/ai\/tech-leaders-say-ai-will-change-what-it-means-to-have-a-job-2dd556fb?mod=article_inline&quot;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">seismic shifts in the workforce<\/a>\u2014said\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commbank.com.au\/articles\/newsroom\/2026\/05\/sam-altman-close-ai-gap.html&quot;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">during a conference<\/a>, \u201cWe\u2019ve been roughly right on technological predictions and pretty wrong on the social and economic implications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Soon after, he told CNBC, \u201cOur industry underestimated how much we\u2019re going to be able to keep people at the center of everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anthropic CEO\u00a0Dario Amodei, who warned in May 2025 that artificial intelligence could eliminate half of entry-level jobs, a year later\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/events\/the-briefing-financial-services-virtual-event&quot;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">highlighted more-positive scenarios<\/a>\u00a0for AI-adopting businesses: \u201cThey can do the same thing with less resources, and that leads to things like layoffs, or they can do more with the same amount of resources. But that requires creativity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/darioamodei.com\/post\/policy-on-the-ai-exponential&quot;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">June essay<\/a>, the executive wrote that in giving warnings of job displacement, he wanted policymakers and the private sector to have the best chance at adapting\u2014he wasn\u2019t trying to be a \u201cprophet of doom.\u201d (He also wrote that the possibility of \u201cenduring job loss\u201d remains.)<\/p>\n<p>Is the sunnier outlook a move to win back customers and the public who are souring on AI\u2019s world-upending promise?
