NCSC Launches AI Research, Governance and Resilience Measures<\/p>\n

The U.K. government is taking a pair of actions to prepare organizations for artificial intelligence-driven attacks and to boost cybersecurity resilience after a year marked by major breaches.<\/p>\n

Great Britain aims<\/a> to build an agentic AI system that triages and fixes vulnerabilities in critical systems in a national agentic cyber defense effort dubbed Cyber Shield, developed by the National Cyber Security Center and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.<\/p>\n

The plan is expected to serve as “the blueprint for a new national cyber defense capability that will hardwire cutting-edge agentic AI into machine speed cyber defense,” said Anne Keast-Butler, director of Government Communications Headquarters, the U.K. intelligence agency that mitigates cyber incidents through the NCSC.<\/p>\n

The DSIT also announced<\/a> that 60 organizations, ranging from cybersecurity and critical infrastructure companies to retailers, vowed to fulfill a list of measures to strengthen their security posture contained in the government-initiated Cyber Resilience Pledge.<\/p>\n

The actions came after Marks & Spencer, Co-op, Harrods and Jaguar Land Rover fell victim to ransomware attacks that disrupted service and bruised the U.K. economy (see: Jaguar Land Rover Hack the Costliest Ever in the UK<\/a>).<\/p>\n

“Many attacks still succeed because of basic vulnerabilities, including outdated or unsupported systems, delays in applying security updates, and weak controls over access to systems and data,” the NCSC said. “These are well-understood risks, but they remain widespread, leaving the U.K. exposed to attacks that are often avoidable.”<\/p>\n

Many organizations are not compliant with the agency’s Cyber Assessment Framework<\/a> guidance, the NCSC said. That needs to be addressed through rapid patching, system modernization and the adoption of resilience software.<\/p>\n

On top of that, the NCSC urged organizations to incorporate AI into their cyber defense before the onset of agentic attacks, which means using AI to discover vulnerabilities, detect and contain incidents and address the safety challenges the technology brings.<\/p>\n

The NCSC will partner with the public and private sectors to test capabilities that have come fresh out of research labs and find commercially scalable solutions for wide adoption. It envisions an AI system that combines red and blue teaming, operates under human oversight and collaborates across organizational boundaries.<\/p>\n

While the AI defense research is underway, the Cyber Resilience Pledge asks participating organizations to take a triple dose of protection.<\/p>\n

They are expected to make cybersecurity a board-level responsibility by training directors on cyber governance and implementing the NCSC’s Cyber Governance Code of Practice, which “shows boards and directors how to manage digital risks and protect their businesses and organizations from cyberattacks.”<\/p>\n

Organizations are also required to sign up for the NCSC’s Early Warning on malicious activities and audit their supply chain to meet the government standards.<\/p>\n
