CAA called on Meta to better protect users\u2019 personal likeness on Wednesday after criticism mounted over the tech company\u2019s new AI image generator, Muse.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one\u2019s name, image, likeness, voice or creative work should be used by any third party, including AI models, without clear, documented consent,\u201d the agency wrote in a statement to TheWrap. \u201cTrue innovation puts creators first: respecting their rights, protecting their livelihoods and giving them real control, not handing it over to platforms.\u201d<\/p>\n

Per CAA, they\u2019ve raised concern on behalf of their clients over the new AI generator, sharing they voiced their \u201cdisapproval and perspective on the need for a more responsible approach.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe call on Meta to make protection the default on Muse Image, not the exception, and enable individuals to opt-in if they want to allow usage of their image or likeness for AI content creation,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cArtists deserve to decide if and how their likeness and work is used, with consent and the ability to set their own terms. This means letting creators impose restrictions, monitor usage and prevent unauthorized endorsements or exploitation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The agency suggested that \u201cresponsible AI\u201d would have \u201cclear disclosures\u201d and oversee the \u201cswift removal of unauthorized content.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThere must be easy ways to spot, track and take down misuse, and it should be clear when something is AI-generated,\u201d the agency added. \u201cCAA believes in the power of new technology, but not at the cost of individuals\u2019 rights or livelihoods. The future of creativity depends on respecting the ownership and autonomy of those who make it possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

A representative for Meta did not immediately respond to TheWrap\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n

Meta launched the Muse Image AI generator on Tuesday, with the\u00a0image-making tool now accessible across the Meta AI app, Instagram and WhatsApp. It is set to launch on Facebook and Messenger soon. Despite touting Muse\u2019s ability to \u201cunderstand complex prompts\u201d and \u201cseamlessly [blend] multiple photos into high-quality creations,\u201d Meta faced backlash after revealing that users can reference other Instagram accounts in prompts, allowing the AI to incorporate those users\u2019 likenesses into the output.<\/p>\n

Artificial intelligence continues to be a hot-button topic in Hollywood, with AI protections even being at the forefront of SAG-AFTRA\u2019s new deal <\/a>with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.<\/p>\n

While some in the industry have been wary to embrace the growing technology, others are set to embrace it. For instance,\u00a0Reese Witherspoon<\/a>\u00a0recently encouraged women to learn AI tools, while\u00a0Sandra Bullock<\/a>\u00a0noted it was time to \u201clean into\u201d the technology.<\/p>\n
