From massive flyovers in Greensborough to a mega land bridge in Bulleen, construction on the North East Link is fundamentally transforming Melbourne’s northeast.
The $26bn project features twin 6.5km road tunnels, two new major interchanges and an upgrade to freeway connections — designed to fix the missing link between the M80 Ring Road and the Eastern Freeway.
Once open in 2028, it will bypass 18 sets of traffic lights, take up to 15,000 trucks off local roads, and reduce travel times between Watsonia and Bulleen by up to 35 minutes.
The Herald Sun has been given an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of progress on Melbourne’s biggest-ever road project, with lead engineers explaining works under way in Greensborough and Bulleen.

The Bulleen interchange at the south of the project has been dubbed the “epicentre of activity” for the North East Link project, with its spaghetti-like network of roads and flyovers connecting to the upgraded Eastern Fwy.

Crews are this week constructing the foundations of the Yarra Link Green Bridge, laying 960-tonnes of steel beams across Bulleen Rd to form the structural deck.
Interim CEO of Vida Roads Paul Roth and Vida Roads Deputy Package Director Sam Witteveen explain the new connections in the video above.
PART 2: Greensborough
Crews have excavated over one million cubic metres of soil to construct a multi-tier interchange and a 400m flyover at Greensborough.
Director of delivery Sebastian Motta explains how the new link will allow for free-flowing traffic in the video below.
