Mark Foy’s remains a defining figure in Australian fashion despite its luxury department store closing decades ago, but is set to undergo a revival as a digital boutique.
The influence it had over Australia’s fashion scene can’t be ignored, with it being the place that brought Dior parades to Sydney, offering a ballroom that hosted Elizabeth Taylor, and even introducing the first escalator to Australia (known as a traveling staircase at the time). Within those marble halls, a legacy was born. Mark Foy’s didn’t simply sell fashion, but truly introduced European couture into Australia’s culture.
First founded in 1995 on Oxford Street, Mark Foy’s grew into an empire that shaped Australian fashion for generations. Even the main building was innovative. The Piazza, the Paris‑inspired flagship that opened in 1909, stood six storeys tall and featured restaurants, a roof garden, a post office, and so many more.
Led by Mark Foy, named for his great uncle and the great‑grandson of one of the original directors, Hugh Victor Foy, this new chapter of the brand introduces a curated selection of Europe’s most recognised high-end luxury brands, including Saint Laurent, Jacquemus, Prada, and more, all available at discounted prices and delivered straight to Australian consumers. Each designer piece is being shipped directly from verified European boutiques, echoing the Foy family’s own buying trips to Europe in the early 1900s.
“In many ways, we are continuing that same philosophy today except instead of loading ships with stock, we can now deliver luxury fashion from Europe directly to your front door,” Foy told Nine.
“People love the idea of an iconic Australian retail name being brought back in a modern way.”
Vintage luxury in a modern world
However, what makes this reopening really interesting is the way the brand is being reimagined for a modern era. Instead of attempting the grand salons of the past, Mark Foy is now translating its legacy into a fully digital format for the generations that shop online on their phones.
“Mark Foy’s is the digital revival of Sydney’s legendary department store, reimagined for those who love European designer pieces and the best prices – without the endless waitlists,” the company says online.
“Sydney’s most beloved store never really left. It was just waiting for the right century to come home.”
It’s a bold return for Mark Foy’s, and one that reflects the ever-evolving shopping landscape in Sydney. For older generations, the rebirth of the Mark Foy’s name will spark memories of a bygone era. For younger generations, it will become an introduction to a brand that has already shaped so much of the city’s history.
And who knows? If the website proves to be successful, we may even see the grandeur of its old department store days return.
