A badly decomposed body has been found partly submerged in a livestock dip on a farm in northern NSW.

Two trail riders made the gruesome discovery at a stockyard on Kyogle Rd at Terragon, about 20km south of Murwillumbah, about 11.20am on Monday.

Police were called and established a crime scene at the property.

The body was removed on Tuesday morning.

A livestock dip is a type of facility used to submerge cattle or other livestock, to treat parasites like ticks or lice.

“At this time, the sex of the deceased is unknown as the scene has been preserved for specialist forensic examination,” a police spokesman said.

“A post-mortem examination will be conducted in coming days to determine identity and cause of death.”

Detective Inspector Matt Zimmer told media police believe the badly decomposed body is female.

“Due to the location of the body, the remoteness of the area the absence of a vehicle or any other mode of transport, we are treating this death as suspicious,” Inspector Zimmer told media.
