Melbourne theatregoers are set to go wild again for The Lion King, shattering the Regent Theatre’s all-time pre-sale record for the Disney stage show
Ahead of general public tickets going on sale today, the blockbuster musical’s pre-sale period— which kicked off on October 8— surpassed any previous production in the historic venue’s history.
When the curtain finally rises in March 2027, it will mark the award-winning production’s show’s first return to Melbourne since 2015.
For performer Nick Afoa, who is returning to the global theatrical family as Mufasa after making his theatre debut as Simba 12 years ago, said that Melbourne holds a special place in his heart.
“I’m a fan of the Melbourne CBD. It’s bustling with diversity. There are talented buskers everywhere, theatres within streets of each other, and great food,” Afoa said.
“I remember the Regent Theatre for its size; I’m looking forward to looking out into that auditorium from the top of Pride Rock.”
Recalling fond memories of past Melbourne seasons when he played Simba, Afoa remembers a unique local tribute.
“A memory that stands out from last time the production was in town was a local Melbourne artist collaborating with Disney and creating a graffiti art piece of me as Simba,” he said.
“It was such a great piece with tribute to that artistic culture that Melbourne has.”
The Lion King, currently showing in Sydney, features performers from Australia, New Zealand and around the world, with the incredible production being experienced by more than 127 million people globally,
General public tickets for the Melbourne season officially go on sale from 9am Thursday.
