A person has died after being struck by a train in Adelaide, triggering the closure of a major rail line until further notice.

The incident unfolded near the Wheatland Street level crossing at Seacliff station about 7.30am on Monday.

The Advertiser initially reported a person had been hit by a train, requiring South Australia’s specialist emergency retrieval service MedStar at the scene.

In an update, police confirmed the death is not being treated as suspicious.

The Seaford line has been closed between Brighton and Noarlunga “until further notice”.

“The Seaford rail line is still closed at the scene, and Adelaide Metro will advise when services resume,” a SAPOL spokesperson said.

Police have also closed Wheatland Street and Maitland Terrace and high-traffic roads adjacent to the station.

Along with the Gawler line, the Seaford line is the busiest in South Australia.

Seacliff Railway Station is also the busiest in the city apart from the centrally located Adelaide Railway Station.

Adelaide Metro recommends commuters continue to check the website for updates, where a complete list of alternative bus service alternatives can also be found.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.
