A woman filmed attacking a young French waitress blamed the young victim for the shocking incident, the traumatised employee has revealed.
Melbourne cafe worker Anais Poupon, 19, has undergone dental treatment after being assaulted by a passerby during a shift on Anzac Day.
CCTV footage of the attack showed the teenager taking plates of food outside before the woman was seen hitting the items into the waitress and onto the ground.
The teenager, whose mouth was injured in the daylight attack, has since revealed the woman told her, “It’s your fault,” before walking away.
“I saw my teeth broke and a lot of blood,” Ms Poupon told Nine’s A Current Affair.
The teenager was left “very upset” by the assault and questioned why the woman targeted her.
“And she told me, ‘It’s your fault’. I’m like ‘what? I do nothing’,” Ms Poupon said.
“I just do my work. I’m like, ‘no sorry but it’s not my fault’.”
The waitress said her mother back in France was “very scared” after learning of the assault on her daughter.
“My mum was very scared but she say, ‘I can (do) nothing, I’m in France’. So she was very scared,” Ms Poupon said.
The cafe worker, who has lived in Australia for just six months, has visited a dentist to be treated for her injuries.
Her employer told the program he was “disgusted” when he saw Ms Poupon walk inside crying, bleeding and “covered in food.”
“The dentist in the area offered to do her teeth for free, which was amazing to hear,” La Vallee cafe owner Josh said.
Ms Poupon, who was back at work on Wednesday, told The Herald Sun that she had initially been scared she would lose her teeth.
“Now I’m not scared because I know it’s not everyone, but at first I was just scared to lose my teeth,” she said.
A Victoria Police spokesperson told SkyNews.com.au on Thursday that the investigation into the incident remains ongoing and that detectives are working to locate the woman involved.
A GoFundMe page launched by a friend of Ms Poupon to support her recovery has raised $2,417 as of Thursday morning.
The friend said Anais had been “struggling to find work” during her working holiday Down Under before recently being employed by the cafe.
“She is now left traumatised and wants to leave the country,” the friend wrote on the page.
The Keilor Road cafe released the footage on Instagram with the caption “please help us identify this woman”.
