NRL 2026: Melbourne Storm losing streak continues against Dolphins, Craig Bellamy diagnosis, Tyran Wishart injury

  • May 1, 2026

Comeback kid Jack Bostock put aside 11 months of heartbreak with a stunning two-try return as his Dolphins inflicted more misery on Craig Bellamy’s Storm with a gutsy 28-10 triumph on Friday night.

In greasy conditions at Suncorp Stadium, brilliant Bostock was the hero as the Dolphins posted 28 unanswered points to consign struggling 2025 grand finalists the Storm to a record seventh consecutive loss.

On match eve, the Storm were rocked by revelations Bellamy had been diagnosed with a neurodegenerative disorder and this was a sad postscript for the beloved super coach.

Besieged Melbourne were slick early as they bolted to a 10-0 lead, but the Dolphins charged home on the back of Bostock’s heroics.

Trailing 10-4 at halftime, the Dolphins snapped their own four-match losing streak, Bostock crossing twice (65th and 74th) before Kulikefu Finefeuiaki crashed over in the final minute to seal a famous Redcliffe revival.

It is the first time in Melbourne’s 28-year history that they have lost seven straight.

JACK THE RIPPER

If anyone deserves success, it is Bostock. What a comeback from the towering utility back.

Playing his first NRL game since snapping his ACL last June, the 22-year-old has lost none of his zip and produced a magnificent scything run in the 65th minute to bust the game open.

The 194cm skyscraper was a constant menace for the Storm, inspiring the Dolphins with 128 metres and four tackle busts to break Melbourne’s hearts. He was ably supported by centre Herbie Farnworth (214m).

SUPERMAN SUA

Dolphins sensation Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow has scored some freakish tries at Suncorp but he met his match in Storm speed demon Sua Fa’alogo.

The 23-year-old scored one of the tries of the 2026 season to stun the Dolphins in the 27th minute.

Taking the ball 25 metres from his tryline, Fa’alogo ghosted across field, straightened, scorched past Farnworth, streaked into the backfield, then stepped past Tabuai-Fidow to seal a magical 75-metre movement.

Fa’alogo finished with 221 metres and six tackle busts and was simply outstanding in a losing team.

MAROON MAX

Redcliffe had a slew of Origin hopefuls and Max Plath submitted a sublime audition as he powered through the Storm rucks.

The NRL’s new six-man interchange could prove handy for Plath, who wouldn’t look out of place on Queensland’s extended bench after this latest spirited display.

The plucky utility threw a brilliant three-man cut out pass for Selwyn Cobbo to cross and cut Melbourne’s halftime lead to 10-4 and he typified Redcliffe’s guts with 43 tackles.

While the ‘Hammer’ and Tom Gilbert struggled for highlights, the lethal Finefeuiaki troubled the Storm and must be in contention for a Maroons back-row debut for Origin I.

OFF THE MUNNI

Queensland coach Billy Slater won’t be hitting the panic button but he will be hoping his skipper Cameron Munster lifts quickly for Origin I.

The Maroons skipper is badly out of touch. When halfback teammate Tyran Wishart hobbled off with an ankle injury after scoring in the 12th minute, Munster needed to step up and take control but he drifted out of the contest.

It would be foolish to suggest Munster be dropped for Origin I but he is miles away from the form that has made him a Maroons matchwinner.

The sight of a downcast Bellamy in the coaching box was one of the saddest images in rugby league.
