NRL live updates: The Dolphins vs Sydney Roosters

Round 15 of the NRL season continues on Friday night with the Dolphins hosting the Sydney Roosters at Lang Park.

Both teams are under strength given their heavy State of Origin representation, but the Tricolours will hand an NRL debut to young gun Rex Bassingthwaighte.

Bassingthwaite, a former schoolboy rugby star, was man of the match in this year’s SG Ball grand final and has been earmarked as the long-term replacement for Roosters skipper James Tedesco.

Cherry-Evans nearly nails a 40/20 but Naufahu just manages to tap it back in. Roosters muscle up in defence, can they flip the momentum?

20′ Farnworth gets Dolphins’ second

A clean break from Naufahu through the middle! Ramsey brings him down but next play they shift left, nice quick hands through Lemuelu and Nikorima put Farnworth over in the corner.

That’s two tries in quick time. Isaako from touch…..nails it! Dolphins 12-0.

18′ Phins nearly strike again

A good run from Fuller on the last earns a set restart and puts the Phins on the attack again.

Katoa puts it up for Bostock on the last but Savala manages to bring it down.

15′ Katoa slices through for opening try

Talau drops a bomb cold from Katoa and the Dolphins have another shot inside the 20.

Farnworth nearly pulls through, he has Molo in support but there’s a big shot from Crichton to level him.

Molo nearly powers over, next play it’s quick ball to Katoa, he throws the dummy and goes over to score! Lovely stuff from the halfback.

Isaako converts and it’s 6-0 Phins.

11′ Dolphins can’t crack them

Foketi catches Farnworth high and the Dolphins will have a fresh set inside the red zone.

Kaufusi nearly sneaks over, Nikorima goes wide to Naufahu on the last but the debutant Bassingthwaight manages to tie him up.

8′ Roosters deny first Phin chance

A good pass from Nikorima puts Naufahu into a little bit of space, last tackle Katoa puts up a bomb but it’s claimed by Cherry-Evans.

5′ Roosters denied the opening try

Naufahu makes an error off a Cherry-Evans bomb and they’ll have the first attacking chance of the night.

A few plays later Cherry-Evans drops Foketi under, doesn’t look like much is on but he gets between Bostock and Molo easily to score!

Hang on, we’re going to the Bunker – Molo juuuuuust had a hand on him when the ball-carrying arm touched the ground. A lucky escape for the Dolphins.

Tips

With both sides so depleted it’s a tough one to pick but I’ll go with the Dolphins – they’re at home, Katoa and Farnworth are both still playing and they’ve been in really strong form recently.

Let’s go Phins by 12 and Lemuelu to score the first try.

Here’s a little bit of the kid in action. He was man of the match in this year’s SG Ball grand final and previously represented Australia Under 19s in rugby union.

Final teams: Dolphins vs Roosters

No changes for the Dolphins but a slight reshuffle for the Chooks.

Rex Bassingthwaite is on the wing and he’s an exciting inclusion. The 19-year old is a junior of some reputation and has been earmarked as the club’s long-term replacement for skipper James Tedesco.

Bassingthwaite’s inclusion means Billy Smith goes to the centres and Egan Butcher drops back to the bench.
