The Mornington Peninsula seat looks set to be a tight race between Liberal candidate Anthony Marsh and One Nation’s Darren Hercus, with tough competition from independent Tracee Hutchison.
Labor’s decision not to contest the by-election has led the Liberals to face an unexpected showdown with One Nation.
The contest will be the first major test of Pauline Hanson’s support in the state.
The by-election is just months away from November’s state general election and was triggered when Sam Groth announced a little more than three years into a four-year term in the Victorian parliament that he intended to step down immediately.
A Roy Morgan poll in April showed Labor slightly leading One Nation and the Liberal Party on primary vote, 25.5 per cent to 24.5 and 24 per cent respectively.
In a Resolve poll earlier in the year, One Nation had only secured 11 per cent of the vote.
The movement to One Nation, echoed in polls around Australia, has the Liberals fearful they could lose Nepean, a seat they currently hold by a 6.4 per cent margin against Labor.
