One Aussie state is set to face a sudden drop in temperatures on Friday after enjoying out-of-the-ordinary hot weather on the east coast.

Those in New South Wales, and especially Sydney, should brace for a lunchtime drop with even cooler weather coming over the weekend.

Australia had its hottest June in 30 years, while Sydney had its hottest ever, but temperatures are expected to fall back to winter averages on Friday for Sydney and southern New South Wales.

Friday temperatures in Sydney will reach a high of 19 degrees, compared to Thursday’s 22 degrees.

The northern coast of New South Wales will still feel warm throughout Friday but can expect to feel winter cool again on Saturday, spreading even up as far as the Gold Coast.

Sky News meteorologist Marina Neuman said that “despite that cold air pumping in, bringing in that dark blue air across both Adelaide and Victoria, Sydney felt warm throughout Thursday and so did much of the coast”.

Neuman said the warmth was thanks to wind barbs from the north bringing in the hot air.

“But that changes by Friday afternoon,” she said, adding that Sydneysiders will be “heading out to a much different feeling on your lunch break”

Neuman said the New South Wales coast will be getting “back closer to those seasonal averages,” which will “carry over for the rest of the week with temperatures across the south looking to remain slightly below average for this time of the year”.

Sydney

Sydneysiders can expect it to stay sunny and dry but feel notable drops in temperature in the afternoon.

Melbourne

Melbourne can expect rain and wind to continue, with a marine wind warning in place for some areas.

Brisbane

The Queensland city will be dry but cloudy, with highs of 26 degrees.

Canberra

Canberra’s showers are expected to ease up later in the day, with strong winds expected and highs of 10 degrees.

Adelaide

Similarly to Melbourne, Adelaide will carry on facing showers and heavy winds, which will ease up towards the evening. Adelaide also has a marine wind warning in place for some areas.

Hobart

Hobart is set for a cloudy day with some winds and a chance of rain.

Perth

The western city will be cloudy with a chance of some slight winds but will remain dry. Highs of 18 degrees.
