Witnesses described seeing the white Volkswagen mount the kerb near the Creative Space before hitting the boy, who sustained serious leg injuries.

He was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Police remain on scene, and inquiries are ongoing.

A Toll helicopter landed on the playing fields as a precaution but departed without a patient onboard.

Video obtained by Manly Observer shows a vehicle mounted on a kerb near fallen e-bikes, then driving off. Police sources confirm the identity of the driver is known to police, though no arrests had been confirmed at the time of publication.

Witness Laura said: “We were just driving down around the corner onto Abbott road and saw a car fully up on the curb.

“We stopped because we were like, someone has been hit.

“The passenger door of the car, kind of opened and then slammed shut, and the driver of that car swerved out, nearly hit us, and then swerved off.”

Laura asked other kids within the group what had happened.

“They said that the guy from the car had thrown a bottle out of the car at the kids on the e-bikes.

“Then they threw it back at the car and then that is when he just accelerated up off the road, like completely off the road, and hit the kid.”

There were also reports on social media prior to this incident claiming kids on e-bikes had smashed a car window, but it is not known if this has any link to the hit and run. Police have not confirmed any incident details, and more specifics on events leading up to the incident will likely emerge in court, should arrests be made.

Laura described the boy’s legs as bleeding and grazed and said the bike had been badly damaged.

“E-bikes are sometimes annoying, but you would not run someone over. That could have gone so much worse.

“I do not know what is going on with the world.”
