Young Perth man suffers severe burns after robot vacuum explodes in his home

A young Perth man is fighting for life after a robot vacuum exploded inside his home, leaving him with severe burns. 

Lachie Perrem, 25, remains in a critical condition under sedation after the explosion at his home in Brabham, north-east of Perth, on Thursday afternoon. 

According to 7News, the vacuum exploded in the kitchen of the property, leaving Mr Perrem with burns across 75 per cent of his body.

He was rushed to the burns unit at Fiona Stanley Hospital, where he is expected to undergo multiple surgeries, extensive medical treatment and months of rehabilitation.

His mother, Fiona Perrem, has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover medical expenses, essential household bills and car repayments while her son recovers.

“Our family has been turned upside down after my beloved son was critically injured in a tragic explosion at his home,” she wrote.

“He is facing an incredibly long road ahead, with multiple surgeries, extensive medical treatment, rehabilitation and months of recovery.”

The explosion also left Mr Perrem, his fiancée Bri Thompson and their housemates without a home.

“Along with his long road to recovery, they now face the heartbreaking task of rebuilding their lives from scratch,” his mother said. 

The blast extensively damaged the home, blowing out windows and blackening walls with fire damage.

“We want to ease as much of that burden as possible so that, when he wakes and begins his recovery, he can focus entirely on getting better instead of worrying about losing everything he has worked so hard for,” she said.

“Every message of support gives our family strength during the hardest time of our lives.”

Ms Thompson said their lives had changed in an instant.

“Our entire life has changed in a matter of moments, and everything has been incredibly intense and overwhelming,” she told 7News.

At the time of publication, the GoFundMe had raised more than $20,500 towards its $50,000 target from 130 donations.
