Hundreds of commuters are stranded on platforms in Melbourne’s southeast after an emergency incident at a Bayside suburb.

Trains on the Sandringham line were suspended about 8am on Tuesday after an emergency services incident at Brighton.

A Department of Transport spokeswoman said the incident was “under the control of Victoria Police”.

“Services will resume when investigations are complete and it’s safe to do so.”

Buses replaced trains between Elsternwick and Sandringham — trains between Flinders St and Elsternwick continued with delays.

A commuter told the Herald Sun she was forced to drive into work because of the chaos.

“Was at Elsternwick station — have decided to drive to work as they weren’t clear on how long the delays were,” she said.

“The train was just idling — it wasn’t moving at all.”

Authorities are urging passengers to consider using a combination of local bus routes 923, 600 and 603 to connect with trains.

“We ask passengers to check station platform displays and listen for announcements, and allow additional time for their journey,” the spokeswoman said.

Traffic was expected on surrounding roads “due to a train stopped in the area”.

“Drivers should use a combination of Beach Road, South Road and Hampton Street.”

Buses continued to supplement trains as delays began to ease.
