A Sydney man has been charged over an alleged bomb threat targeting a foreign embassy in Australia.
The AFP alleged the 47-year-old made an online threat to harm the diplomatic mission, prompting an investigation by its National Security Investigations team.
Police executed a search warrant at the man’s Colyton home on Thursday where they suspect the threats were made from.
They seized a mobile phone and about two grams of a white crystalline substance suspected to be methamphetamine.
He was charged with using a carriage service to make a threat to cause serious harm, an offence carrying a maximum penalty of seven years’ imprisonment.
The man is due to appear before Parramatta Local Court on Friday.
AFP Detective Acting Inspector Joel Rivers said threats targeting diplomatic missions would not be tolerated and thoroughly investigated.
“Embassies and consulates are locations of the highest importance and should be able to function without facing the threat of harm,” Det A/Insp Rivers said.
He warned people should not assume they were anonymous online.
“People should not assume they are anonymous online or beyond the AFP’s reach,” he said.
“The AFP has the means to identify those responsible and ensure they are brought before the courts.”
The investigation began in June after the AFP received information from an overseas law enforcement agency about the alleged online threat.
