A powerful cold front sweeping across southeast Australia will deliver a day of heavy rain, strong winds and plunging temperatures on Sunday.

The system has already pushed across South Australia and will continue moving east, bringing widespread showers, damaging winds and fresh snowfall to alpine regions.

The system is being driven by a deep low-pressure system over the Southern Ocean.

Rain that crossed Adelaide on Saturday will spread across Victoria before extending into Tasmania and eastern New South Wales during Sunday.

While rain will be widespread, forecasters are also closely monitoring damaging winds expected to accompany the front.

Wind warnings remain in place across the New South Wales ski resorts, where gusts of up to 110km/h are forecast above 1,900 metres.

Victorian alpine areas are also expected to experience wind gusts of around 100km/h.

The state will also stay wet and cool, with Melbourne expected to reach 14C.

South Australia will remain unsettled throughout Sunday, with showers continuing across the agricultural districts, including Adelaide, where temperatures are forecast to reach just 14C.

Hobart is expected to reach 11C, although rainfall there is forecast to be lighter than in the west.

New South Wales will see showers across the ranges and adjacent slopes, with isolated showers elsewhere in the south and east.

Snow showers are forecast above 1,000 metres across the southern ranges, while patchy morning frost is expected in alpine districts.

Temperatures will remain below average across much of the state, with Wagga Wagga forecast to reach 12C and Goulburn just 8C.

Despite the cold conditions, there is welcome news for Australia’s ski fields after a slow start to the snow season.

Earlier forecasts suggested 10 to 15 centimetres of fresh snow, but much larger totals are now expected between Sunday afternoon and into Tuesday.

Perisher is forecast to receive up to 40 centimetres of snow, while Falls Creek could record as much as 57 centimetres.

Snow is also expected to fall to low-lying areas of Tasmania.

Elsewhere, conditions will be considerably more settled.
