A 5-year-old boy has died and a woman believed to be his mother has been seriously injured after they were hit by an SUV in Perth, Australia.
The pair, who have not been named, were crossing a street when a Toyota Land Cruiser struck them on Tuesday, July 14, at around 4:25 p.m. local time, according to news.com.au.
The incident took place outside Miles Park in the suburb of Cloverdale, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).
Authorities said the child was transported to Perth Children’s Hospital and died from his injuries, per ABC and news.com.au.

A 48-year-old woman, believed to be the boy’s mom, per news.com.au, was taken to Royal Perth Hospital with critical injuries, ABC and nine.com.au reported.
The woman was in stable condition as of the morning on Wednesday, July 15, according to ABC.
The driver of the Toyota Land Cruiser stopped at the scene of the crash and was uninjured, per ABC and nine.com.au.

Local resident Kay Klass told ABC that she saw paramedics carrying out efforts to save the boy.
“A friend told us he had tried to run across the road and his mother had tried to save him,” she said. “I stood there for half an hour to 45 minutes and they were just resuscitating, resuscitating.”
Residents told The West Australian that the child had been with his older brother, mother and father when the incident occurred, per news.com.au.

“I heard a very big bang,” Resident Emma Kerich told the outlet. “I was inside, so I came outside and I quickly ran out. I saw a lady lying down. She was facing down, and a small boy just there in the bus stop, lying down, facing down.”
“There was another man with a son just here outside my door, and they were really crying. So I came to check on the lady … she was bleeding. Then I quickly turned and got inside to get the towels for them,” Kerich continued.

“Then when I came outside and checked on the boy my neighbor was there already, and she was performing CPR on him,” she added.
Kerich recalled seeing the man and the older boy, believed to be the victim’s father and brother “crying really, really loud and shaking.”
“I tried to comfort them … it was just horrific, it was bad,” she continued. “The older boy was saying, ‘That’s my mummy, my brother,’ she said, and was hugging the dad, saying ‘dad, mummy, mummy.’ “
The Western Australian Police’s Major Crash Unit is investigating the crash, per ABC.
“The WA Police Force continues to urge all motorists to take care on the road,” a spokesperson told news.com.au. “Drive safely and keep in mind the wellbeing of yourself and others.”
