A man has woken from an induced coma weeks after a robotic vacuum cleaner exploded inside his Perth home, leaving him with critical injuries.

Lachie Perrem, 25, was in the kitchen of his Brabham home about 5pm on July 2 when a robot vacuum exploded.

The 25-year-old, who lives with his fiancee and housemates, was rushed to Fiona Stanley Hospital in a critical condition.

He sustained burns to 75 per cent of his body and required multiple surgeries before being placed in an induced coma.

Two weeks after the horrific injuries, his family have confirmed he has woken from his induced coma and undergone a third round of surgery.

In a GoFundMe update, mum Fiona said the 25-year-old woke from his coma last week and “started communicating with me, his fiancee, and his medical team”.

She while Mr Perrem’s voice wasn’t back to normal, “he is finding other ways to communicate, and seeing him awake has brought us so much hope”.

On Monday, Mr Perrem underwent a third round of surgery to remove damaged tissue from his fingers, left elbow and torso.

“Every surgery is another step forward in his recovery,” Fiona wrote.

She said Tuesday was a “special milestone” for the family, as Mr Perrem was able to go outside into the hospital courtyard and “enjoy some fresh air”.

“It may seem like a small thing, but moments like these mean so much,” Fiona said.

She said her son was making progress every day and the family were “incredibly grateful for each improvement and for the ongoing support, kindness and prayers from everyone”.

Images obtained by 7News showed the aftermath of the explosion. The walls were blackened by the blast, which spread from the kitchen to the living room.

Firefighters told NewsWire they believed the explosion was “accidental due to a fault in a robotic vacuum cleaner”.

The device has been sent to Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety for further investigation,” a Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson said.
